Ikea was out handing out catalogs close to the neighborhood where they are going to open. I have a friend who was able to get me a copy. This is major because it has the prices. I was so excited about Ikea opening and talking it up and everything. I am still excited, but it has been dampened by the prices for most items.
The photo at the top is what the price is in the United States, $1,499. The photo at the bottom is the price that is being offered in Santo Domingo, RD$115,500 pesos ($3,208).
This couch offered in Santo Domingo is RD$31,500 pesos ($875). At least the lamps are the same price. Still can't wait for the Swedish Meatballs in the cafeteria.

How soon will this store close??
dam why cant you wish it luck! don't you know their is a lot of well to do Dominican, and their children! what about all the people traveling from PR buying things to take back.
what about the jobs it could bring to the country! Think about what! the cost to import all this down to DR. what you see when you walk down the conde is nothing to the money that some of the people have!
I do wish it luck and hope it is successful. I also want rich Dominicans and their children to be happy. I just wish the prices were better.

It will be popular because it is popular in the US and Europe. We Dominicans love whatever is popular abroad.
Trust that Ikea is not opening a store on a whim. It has been researched to death and i am sure it will be successful. They will make changes as needed because they are a very successful company.
the prices are really high
ikea's moto of affordable solution for better living is not applicable to the prices they are advertising in DR, have in mind the average person here makes just over 200 dollars/month and as we all know the beauty of ikea is providing low quality design pieces at very affordable prices...but I'm assuming the wealthy people from here will embrace IKEA as real high end stores like Vitra, Capellini, Cassina or Moss
The prices will eventually get better when they start sourcing from locals. For now, no locals will provide materials to Ikea of Santo Domingo.
