PARIS (Reuters) - French police have arrested an Air France stewardess on suspicion of stealing thousands of euros in cash, cards and jewelry as passengers slept on long haul flights, a newspaper reported on Tuesday.

Police investigating thefts over several months on flights between France and the Far East picked up the 47-year old attendant identified as Lucie R. after she landed from Tokyo on Friday, Le Figaro said.

"Her bank accounts showed an absurd gap between her lifestyle and her declared income," the newspaper quoted a police investigator as saying.

Police launched an investigation in January after about 4,000 euros' ($5,170) was stolen from five passengers. The robber took advantage of sleeping passengers, taking euros, yen, and Swiss francs as well as watches, jewels, credit cards and even cheque books.

According to the newspaper, the woman, who worked mainly in business class, began her spree in March 2009 to ease financial problems and has confessed to 26 thefts.

Since January, there have been about 140 thefts, the newspaper said. "The Japanese were ideal prey because they travel with lots of cash -- euros and yen -- instead of paying with credit cards," a police source said.

Police found travelers' cheques, blank cheques and bank card numbers at her home, the newspaper said.

The minimum wage in the Dominican Republic is 83 cents (U.S.) per hour. There is a new factory in Villa Altagracia that pays its workers three times the minimum wage. They even allowed the factory to be unionized. The owners of the factory, Knights Apparel, has decided that this factory should pay a living wage. The New York Times has run an article exploring the pros and cons. There is also a great photo slide show with audio.

The dog days of summer. The weather is overcast with intermittent rain. Seeds of change are in the air. Boredom. Work. What's next? The Dominican Republic's most wanted fugitive was caught in Puerto Rico yesterday. He escaped from jail in Puerto Rico in 1999, and has been on the lam ever since. He owned several million-dollar properties in the D.R., and traveled in highest realm of Dominican society. I believe there are a lot of prominent people in the Dominican Republic who are very nervous wondering what he is going to say. He was arrested under U.S. jurisdiction so it is very unlikely he will just be able to get out on bail, like people are able to do in the D.R. I see a movie being made very shortly. I wonder if anyone is going to collect the reward. Stay tuned.

Police Killings

In the last couple of weeks the police have killed several people. What has really got people up in arms is that these people were killed when they didn't stop at a police roadblock. The problem is that most people can't tell the difference between the police and criminals at 2 am on a dark stretch of road. I was just reading today that the police have killed 1600 people in the last three years. Which averages to around 1.5 people per day. What makes it even worse is that as I was looking at the news and saw the photo of one of the latest victims, I found out that I knew him. We never met in person, but online. He was leaving his 23rd birthday party with his family. They encountered a roadblock. They decided to keep going, not knowing If these were actual police or criminals. The police shot at the car and he was killed. He leaves a distraught family and a 2 year-old daughter. Also killed in the last couple of weeks was an 81 year old gentleman. He was killed in a small town. Again, after not stopping for a police blockade. There are many voices coming out calling on the government to have the police change their policy of shooting at cars who don't stop. We'll see.

Dengue Outbreak

State anticipates a rise in the incidence of Dengue Fever due to
the recent heavy rains. Dengue is a tropical disease caused by
a virus and transmitted to humans by the mosquito Aedes aegypti.
The information on this message is not intended or implied to be
a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis, or
treatment.

Please be aware that no vaccine is available.
Aedes is typically a day-biting mosquito, most active during
dawn and dusk, and can be easily identified by the distinctive
black and white stripes on its body. The mosquito is attracted
by the odor, carbon dioxide, and heat emitted by humans and
animals. Dengue is characterized by fever, rash, and muscle and
joint pains.

To minimize the chances of getting Dengue, medical professionals
recommend denying the mosquito its preferred breeding ground:
clean stagnant water. Some common sources include artificial
and natural containers such as flower vases and pot plates;
pails, water-storage jars, basins; discarded receptacles; roof
gutters; gully traps; unused toilet bowls and cisterns; A/C and
dish rack trays; concrete drains; tree holes; leaf axils, fallen
leaves; and ground depressions.

To prevent water collecting in these receptacles, change water
in vases/bowls every other day; remove water from flower pot
plates every other day, and add sand to the plates; turn over
all storage containers; remove stagnant water collected on
leaves, tree branches, and in drains, and clean roof gutters at
least once a month.

To prevent mosquito bites use a mosquito repellant containing
the insecticide DEET (concentration 30 to 35 percent) or
Picaridin (concentration 20 percent or greater for tropical
travelers). Also, dress in protective clothing (long-sleeved
shirts, long pants, socks, and shoes) especially during early
morning hours before daybreak and in the late afternoon before
dark when mosquitoes are most active. Keep unscreened windows
and doors closed and screened windows and doors in good
condition.

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), early
recognition of Dengue and prompt supportive treatment can
substantially lower the risk of developing severe disease.
Watch for warning signs as an initial fever often declines 3 to
7 days after the principal symptoms begin.

Go IMMEDIATELY to an emergency room or the closest health care
provider if any of the following warning signs appear:

Severe abdominal pain or persistent vomiting.

Red spots or patches on the skin.

Bleeding from nose or gums.

Vomiting blood.

Black, tarry stools (feces, excrement).

Drowsiness or irritability.

Pale, cold, or clammy skin.

Difficulty breathing.

American citizens traveling or residing overseas are encouraged
to register with the appropriate U.S. Embassy or Consulate on
the State Department’s travel registration website at
https://travelregistration.state.gov

Jack Phillips 18 Months Later

As I watched a local television news channel I recognized a face of someone who was alleged to have been involved with the Jack Phillips murder. His street name is pronounced 'Nee*voh,' and he is from San Jose de Ocoa. He was at the courthouse in Santo Domingo being interviewed. I didn't catch it from the beginning, but from what I gather he was being released after being held for 15 months. I then decided to go online to see what I could find out. According to published reports, the three people suspected of being involved with Jack's murder have been set free. Nothing mentioned of other leads, nothing.

This has a been a stressful last couple of weeks. My laptop had slowed to a crawl, and I would have to reboot every 30 minutes. Every time I wanted to update the blog. It would turn to frustration. Finally, going deep into chat rooms and trying everything it is running much smoother now. Thank God!

The weather has been quite dreary lately. I can't complain at all because we have had months of drought. So the water is desperately needed. I just feel for those here on vacation looking for some sun. It peaks out every now and again, but the clouds are more prevalent.

Then cable in our area has switched from analog to digital. This is a great thing. Really. But there was no warning. Nada. Just one day the boxes you had didn't work. And bureaucracy here doesn't work quite like it should. So getting things handled in a timely manner is not a pressing matter for companies here. They could give less than a fuck about customer service. Period.

But, I still love it here. But there are days when it gets on your nerves. I understand that it is the way things are. I accept them and move on.

Expect many gay visitors this week from the U.S. for the Memorial Day holiday. Might have a little party. We'll see. The publishers of Odyssey Magazine were here and wrote about their antics above.

Now, where were we?

Yesterday, national congressional/mayoral elections were held. I am glad that it is over. In the last couple of weeks there have been rallies in the colonial zone/malecon that have shut the area down. All the streets were like a parking lot.

The electoral process here is very interesting. The government pays for everything. All the parties are allotted money to pay for the campaign. And like politics everywhere, it is big business. Also, just like everywhere else, when election time comes you see a few improvements, along with some hefty promises. Our street was paved. A candidate running for congress came through the neighborhood and offered to fumigate everyone's house/apartment. Seems quite expensive, but that is how things are done. It is almost like people (at least some people) expect to be offered something. It is like they know that as soon as the election is over you won't be able to get shit out of the government. That is, until the promises start for the next election.

A 72-hour holiday was declared by the government. Alcohol sales were stopped Saturday night. Unfortunately that didn't stop several people from getting killed, and many more wounded in election violence around the country. There is a lot of money at stake. Today it is a holiday and it is eerily quiet. Yesterday, most businesses were closed, even the trusty colmadoes (corner stores) and it was a ghost town around here.

Some young progressives started a campaign telling people not to vote for anyone. Vota por Ninguno seems to have gained steam in the last few months. I think many people in the electorate have no faith in any political party here. The refrain I heard over and over was "they are all thieves." This would probably explain why it is estimated that less than 50% of those eligible actually voted. Early results have the ruling PLD party maintaining their grip on power. Democracy in action.

I just signed up for Facebook over a week ago, and already I have made contact with people I have not heard from in 20 years. But today a friend sent me a video that was made in 1981. I was a senior at Cass Technical High School in Detroit, Michigan. Back then it was the only magnet school in the city, and attracted talented students from all over Detroit. I was a part of the performing arts department, and I was very active in school theater. In this video on Youtube that my friend Ron sent me, you can see me at the 50 second mark. We were rehearsing a play. I was playing the co-lead (Matthew Harrison Brady), of course, in Inherit the Wind. You can also see me at the end with my arms outstretched. The power of the internet is amazing. I have very few pictures of myself during this time. To think there is video of me when I was fifteen years old is just amazing. This week went by quick. The heat is definitely upon us. Not so much heat, but the humidity. It is here. I have finally signed up for Facebook. I am glad that I finally signed up because I have heard from people when I was kid. Who knew? Actually I was tired of getting links to look at photos and what not, but because it was on Facebook I could not see it. While surfing around on some pages there I came across the photos at the top. I remember when they were done, but had not seen them published anywhere. Of course they were on Facebook, but I could not see them. The guy above is a really cool guy, but you would never think he would take great photos. But the camera loves him. Again, who knew?

Having a small cocktail party tomorrow for a really good friend who is visiting. This is a milestone birthday for him. He also won a Tony Award last year, so it has been a great year for him overall. I hope the man with the beautiful eyelashes can come by for a drink. Here's hoping. I hope you had a great week, and have a safe weekend.

Last month we had carnaval celebrations in Santo Domingo. I thought that was the end of the carnaval season. It was not. Several of the smaller towns like Bani, Bonao and Cotui had celebrations in the weeks after carnaval was celebrated in Santo Domingo. One Sunday, some friends and I were driving and decided to head somewhere, but nowhere in particular. We pull into a town that was having their local carnaval celebrations. Actually, because next month there will be congressional elections, it was more like a large campaign rally for those seeking office. While watching the parade of humanity we noticed this tall 6 foot 3 gentleman at the top. My Dominican friend was trying to make small talk with him. To no avail. I then decide to shoot the photo of him above to remember him by. Fast forward to yesterday. I have a friend here and he is looking at the photos on my computer and told me he knew him. Fast forward to this morning and these are photos that I took in the vestibule of my building this Sunday morning. Now I will pass him on to Ernest so we can some professional photos. Great, beautiful day thus far.

Been doing nothing much lately but bullshitting. Being lazy. Yesterday was incredibly hot. The kind of heat that as soon as you open your door you want to go back inside. Not temperature-wise, but the humidity. Today is MUCH better.

Heard about a new gay club that opened last Friday. I have been told different variations on the name, so I will wait until I can confirm its name and location.

Been taking a few trips lately. Most of my little trips lately have been to the interior of the country, and I have been neglecting the coast. I have rectified this as I have been to beach at Guayacanes three times in the last week. Yesterday I went with friends, Bennie and James, to celebrate James' 39th birthday. The beach or the river is where you go on really hot days. I love just being able to get up and go. Or do nothing at all. Mostly, I just love not having a set 9-5 schedule and being spontaneous.

While in Guayacanes the other day I noticed a house that I saw for sale on the internet. While driving by there was a gentleman sitting out front. I decided to ask him if we could see the place. All he could say was no. He was most gracious and kind and took us on a tour of this 'compound.' It is the only way to describe it. You walk in and you have your own private oasis. And it can all be yours for a couple million dollars.

The decor is very dark, with lots of wood and a seemingly masculine aesthetic. It didn't say beach house at all to me. There is a lot of great art throughout. But it screams privacy, wide-open space, Caribbean sea, and did I mention privacy. It has a main house with 4 bedrooms, and a guest house with 4 bedrooms. There is a professional kitchen, game room, security system/cameras, just everything you need to move right in. Everything is for sale, the house and all the furnishings.One can at least dream. I hope to post more this week. Also wanted to say hola to the man with the beautiful eyelashes. I am thinking of you.

Los Dueños del Circo

There is a television show called Los Duenos del Circo. It is, arguably, one of the most scandalous shows on Dominican television. I cannot think of an American or European counterpart. What comes to mind are Hollywood scandal magazines of the 50's, like Confidential, and Perez Hilton combined with an even more acidic tongue. They talk about EVERYONE. And they are one of the most popular shows on television here locally. They have taken on everyone high and mighty. They have been sued and vilified for some of the things they say and do. But honestly, with shows like this all over the world the people who produce and air the show knew exactly what they were doing. I believe. Controversy means large viewership and large viewership mean revenue.

Another scandal is that they are unequivocally gay. It is not a scandal for me, but it is something that has many people commenting. And not positively. The two male hosts are also not Dominican, they are from Venezuela. Which also has many people unhappy. How dare these 'extranjeros' scandalize Dominican society the way they do. Day before yesterday they got into more trouble than they bargained for. Venya Carolina, a television personality, came on to the show to confront the hosts of Los Dueños del Circo about the negative things it says about her. Then things got out of hand when Venya Carolina gets into a tussle with the hosts and it all goes downhill from there. Look at the video here:

Today it is announced that the three hosts that participated in the melee have been suspended from appearing on television for three to six months. One of the hosts left the country last night. Dominican media has been riveted by the scandal.

Crackdown?

The District Attorney for the National District of Santo Domingo has announced a meeting with residents of the colonial zone for this Friday. It was prompted by the front-page article in the newspaper. Honestly, the colonial zone could use a little cleaning up. I just fear that this whole exercise is solely about removing gay people from Parque Duarte. Stopping underage prostitution, drugs and the like is a good thing. While there at it, they could also round up the dozens of women who take over Avenida Independencia (behind the major hotels) and Malecon every night. If you don't like underage kids, don't indulge in drugs, and generally represent yourself with some decorum things will be fine. Just make sure to have your identification when you go out. I bet every bar/club will be asking for it this weekend.

No Transvestites Allowed?

There is a new bar/lounge opening soon (exact date to be determined). It will be called the Rubio Bar & Lounge. From what I have been told it will located in the front of Cha, utilizing the terrace. That is not the part that is newsworthy. In publicizing the new bar it was revealed that Transvestites would not be allowed to enter. As you can imagine this set off a firestorm. Seeing as the owner of Cha is herself a member of this community, it was seen as a slap in the face. Transsa, an organization that fights for transgendered rights, wrote a scathing item about it. Because of the furor which ensued the restriction has now been lifted. This wasn't the first time that this has been done. The new place, Eco Le Kua, also had a flier stating no Transvestites. Everyone wants to create a place that offers 'exclusivity.' Unfortunately, only excluding Transvestites isn't the way to go about it. I am for discriminating against ALL transgendered people as long as we don't discriminate against: fat people; ugly people; black people; poor people, blind people; short people; Spanish people; people with AIDS; gossips, people who live in Naco; people with acne; people who are on Adam4Adam; white people; devil worshipers; people with long-hair; people who don't wear Prada; etc., etc., etc.

Parque Duarte

I have been talking about how there have been rumblings of complaints from people about the gay 'takeover' of Parque Duarte. Well this morning there is an article in the Listin Diario newspaper (click her e for English translation). It is the lead story, above the fold. Obviously the editors deem this story to be more important than any other facing the country today. There is also an editorial in the paper imploring the authorities to put an end to the shameful acts of 'immorality.' Parque Duarte has always been used by young people to congregate. Ever since I have lived here there have been people drinking and carousing in the park. The difference is that now those people are predominately homosexual. And that simple fact bothers a lot of people. People who have the power to get the story on the front page of Listin Diario. Above the fold, no less. I don't frequent Parque Duarte. Not my thing. But, I know many people who do. It will be very interesting to see how this plays out. Be careful.

Good Friday is a holiday observed by Christians commemorating the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. I am not religious but I am a believer. Semana Santa is a week where it seems the whole country shuts down. It was definitely that way in Santo Domingo today. You can drive anywhere. Though nothing is open. Most people are visiting family, or at a resort. I had several guests arriving today, and one arriving tonight, so I can't go anywhere. Here is a photo from the religious procession that passed by my house.

Lastly, I want to make sure that everyone knows I am not leaving (at least not yet). And there is no one I am trying to get a visa for, and more importantly there will be no free party with all the strippers from the Dominican Republic. Just a great dream.

It has been a hard and tough decision, but I am moving back to the States. I have been thinking long and hard about what my next move should be. I have been feeling like I should be acting more like an adult. To start taking my future seriously. I need to go and get a 'real' job and have a steady income, and save for retirement. God knows this journey has been life-altering. But it is now time to be serious. With the job situation as precarious as it is in the states right now I didn't think it would be possible. But I have a job offer from a good friend who is a lawyer. I think I have also secured an apartment. I will know for sure about the apartment this week. And now is just the time. The weather is starting to get warmer and this will allow me to slowly adjust instead landing there in the dead of winter.

What makes this change bearable is that I have been able to get a visa for my Dominican boyfriend to live with me and attend school. I have been working on it for two years and it finally came through. I know what some of you are thinking. Is this wise? I never thought this would happen, but I am deeply, truly in love. It is time to settle down and be committed to one person. I also believe you just have to take chances in life and step out on faith. If we are meant to be together we will be. I know that he loves me. He told me so. He is different. He comes from a good family and has traveled to other countries. I wish everyone could be as happy.

The blog will still continue. I have recruited another foreigner who lives here, who wishes to remain anonymous. Along with a local gay Dominican to keep the blog running. I may even contribute some items here and there. But for the most part I will be passing the torch and moving on. This way you can still find out what is going on here and keep up with the latest this, that and the other.

I am leaving on May 1, 2010. So on April 30, I will have a party at the old Arena venue. For one night only Arena will be open and invitation-only. Everything will be free. We will be having a sit-down dinner for 100, and afterward a spectacular show with all the male strippers of the Dominican Republic in attendance. To close the night there will be a small fireworks display. I want to go out with a bang.

I want to thank everyone who has been supportive and helpful to me over the many years of the this journey. If you would like to join me for the final party please send me an email. For those of you who can't make it I hope you have a great April Fools' Day.

Jari Ramirez, a well-known local television host has been speaking about the hypocrisy of certain Dominicans who praised Ricky Martin's emergence from the 'closet.' While remaining silent, or even criticizing him when he gave an interview talking about his personal life. Blabbeando covered it here. I didn't know that he was now living his life openly and free. I think that is great because he is on television everyday. Most people already knew he was gay anyway. And I just think showing people that we do same things as everyone else is good. It won't change opinions overnight, but it will in the end. There are a LOT of gay people on television here. In front of, as well as behind the cameras. Who's next?

And with those words Ricky Martin is free. It is done. Over. Now he can go about his life and not worry about what will happen if people were to find out he was gay. Now they know. I don't believe it will hurt his career at all. Sure, there are going to be things said that aren't pleasant. But then life isn't always pleasant. Coming out is never easy. And everyone has to do it in their own time. But it should be done. I hope it gives encouragement to other performers, especially in Latin America.

Went to the opening of Eco Le Kua on Saturday. Nice place and a small crowd was there. It is owned by the former owner of Gazela. This past weekend was a preview. It will be close this coming week for Semana Santa (Easter Week), but will reopen soon after. There is a patio space and potentially more space upstairs. Will check it out again when it reopens and hope to get some more photos.

Chachita Rubio will be hosting and performing at this year's InfernoDR.

Today I had a great lunch at a restaurant called Michelangelo. The restaurant is located on Avenida Roberto Pastoriza and Winston Churchill, in Plaza Las Americas 1. Which is in the Piantini section of Santo Domingo. The food was fresh and expertly prepared and presented. And even better surprise was the service, which can be severely lacking in this country, even in the better establishments. The best surprise of all was the price. I took some photos with my cell phone camera, but they came out too dark. When I checked out their website I noticed that the photos look exactly like what was presented. Another plus, management speaks English. If you want a great meal, excellent service, chic decor all at a price that seems too reasonable, you should definitely give this place a try.

There had been whispers about another gay bar opening. And it seems that it is true. I received an email about the new bar, Eco le Kua. The grand-opening takes place this Saturday, March 27, 2010. You can rest assured that I will be there checking the place out. The email (and web presence) lays out some creative programming. Every Friday night from 8 - 11pm will be 2x1 and there will be male and female strippers. On Wednesday's they will be open and charge RD$150 to get in, but you can bring what you want to drink. Interesting.

Like I said. I wouldn't miss it.

Been very lazy over the last week. It seems that the heat is starting to rear its ugly head again. It is always 'hot' here, it just seems like the humidity is picking up. There are predictions that it is going to be an active hurricane season. And feel the same way for some strange reason. This past winter was unseasonably cool. Not complaining, but seemed like it was too nice. The last couple of weeks I have been traveling around the country taking day trips with friends. Hoping to go to Bani this weekend for their carnaval. We'll see.

Zoe Saldana was in the country (along with Wyclef Jean) to accept a Casandra award. She was beautiful and radiant, as per usual, and exuding Hollywood glah*mour. She was also honored at the presidential palace with the country's highest honor.

Yes, in the Dominican Republic. She showed up to the Casandra Awards like it was just normal to show up with the person you are dating. Right? Well, anyway I was surprised and shocked at how she is not bothered. How beautiful AND courageous. I wanted to do something specifically about her, but Blabbeando has written a great piece about her that includes videos. It just makes me even more proud of her. It doesn't hurt that she is also a great musician with her own distinctive style.
The Cha family lost one of their bartenders. He was killed being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Rest in peace, Juan Carlos.

Yesterday was carnaval in Santo Domingo. At the start of the weekend it didn't seem like the weather was going to cooperate. We are in a drought situation right now and we have not had sufficient rainfall in the last several months. Since late last week the weather has been overcast, breezy and cool. It looked like it would rain at any moment. But it didn't until Saturday. Which is the day of Mario's birthday celebration. Everything went off like a hitch. Great carnaval, though it started late and I didn't have enough light for photos. One thing back in force again was all the men dressed as women. Loved it.

This past Saturday, February 27, the Dominican Republic celebrated their 166th birthday. There was a parade on the Malecon. I went. But it was boring. It is a military parade and looking at the men in uniform was great, but otherwise boring. I didn't take many pictures (except for the guy above). Thought I would just show the video from last year.

There are many tourists in town visiting. You need a reservation at Paco's to get a seat. Business has been incredible (for me, at least). It should be a great carnival this week. I hope to get some good photos to show you.

Angelita Trujillo, the youngest daughter of Rafael Leonidas Trujillo (former Dominican dictator), has written a book. From the excerpts of the book, her life was extremely charmed. She talks of Queen Elizabeth's coronation, parties with Barbara Hutton, and other Dominican elites. But the overall tone is how great her father was. It is already generating tremendous interest. I hope this is going to be translated, as I would love to read this book. I wonder if she will return to the D.R. to do interviews?

Len Ziebarth, an American ex-pat who lived here in Santo Domingo passed away in the hospital last night. He was suffering from liver cancer. I didn't know Len very well. After Scotch left the former Casa New Yorker he ran it for a time. That is where I met him. He was officiating a commitment ceremony. This is what I wrote about that night on December 27, 2007: The highlight of the ceremony was the minister, Len. Len's sermon was riveting and poignant. He talked about how he had been a minister for 35 years, and once he came out as gay, he had to leave the church. He then read the passage from the 23rd Psalm, and another about Ruth. Again, beautiful and poignant.

Ikea is Open!

Ikea opened yesterday. And from what I can see it was a great success. My doubts about pricing have been quelled. I still think there are things ridiculously priced. But after seeing the thousands of square feet of space. Along with finding some great things at prices I have never seen in the D.R. I think they will do fine. I went earlier in the day about 11am. Was told it would not open until after 1pm, once the president was there to cut the ribbon. Finally opened and it was a line to get in. Even when I left @ 9pm. And the Swedish meatballs are just like I remember them. Welcome Ikea!

When driving around the country it is possible to find the most beautiful flowers. For cheap. We loaded up on these flowers because they were only $0.55 - $0.60 cents for each stem. I don't know what they are called but they are beautiful. I'm off now to check on Ikea. Today is their grand-opening.

Did the police set off some mace in Parque Duarte? Or, some other agent to get the people to disperse? This is what is being alleged by many who were there. With the gay nightlife in a sort of funk, Parque Duarte has been extremely crowded with sometimes hundreds of gays on the weekends. I am told by many that the current head of tourist police covering the colonial zone is not a friend of the gays. At all. At least that is what is alleged. I do know that many are not happy with all the gays in the park.

Last Friday there was a horrific accident on Las Americas highway -- which is the main highway to and from the airport -- where a van carrying almost 27 people crashed into the Caribbean Sea. Published reports say the driver was going at an excessive speed, while darting in and out of traffic. Other reports stated he had a heart attack. While still other reports state that one of the tires exploded while he was driving at excessive speed. One thing is for certain, he and eleven other people are confirmed dead, including a pregnant woman and a two-month old baby. While driving to the airport on Sunday there were hundreds of people out to see the search for other bodies. In the last five years more than 7,000 people have died in traffic accidents.

Yesterday was a beautiful, hot sunny day. The last time Ernest was here we went to Chaco Prieto to take some pictures. I always wanted to go back. You drive to this secluded location. Then you have to hike back into the forest for about a half-hour. And then you see it. Beautiful, crystal clear and ice cold. The town is very rural and poor, but the people take great pride in this area. I have been to many places like this in the Dominican Republic, and often you see a lot of garbage. Not here. Pristine. There are garbage cans along the trail. There were even police patrolling and reminding everyone to take their basura. I'm told there is another more magnificent waterfall about 3 KM further. I will be back to explore, and will bring my camera along.

Mercado Nuevo is a market located in one of the poorer barrios of Santo Domingo, Villas Agricolas. All types of fruits and vegetables are available for rock-bottom prices. But, this place ain't for the faint of heart. Purchased for less than RD$500 pesos ($14) was limes, celery, tomatoes, spices, fresh corn, and many, many plantains. Many neighborhoods have these local markets, but I have not seen one as big as this.

Been very busy lately. Many friends are visiting. Have a good friend here who is about to get some cosmetic surgery done. So I have been running around with him. We have a great doctor, and I will have more on that in a separate entry. Unfortunately he has not consented to before and after photos. I asked.

Been getting emails from our gay brethren who work for the U.N and other N.G.O.s working in Haiti. The situation has improved. But it is still quite dire. I have had a few come stay with me and the stories are horrific. What is amazing about these people are that anywhere in the world there is a tragedy they are the first people trying to get there to see what they can do to help. These are the people who will still be working here long after the worlds attention has moved on to the next tragedy. There are many people from the U.N. and other agencies who will be based in Santo Domingo for the unforeseeable future. Most of the hotels along the malecon are full. I had breakfast this morning at the Jaragua Hotel and it was filled with many rich Haitians, along with a large contingent of aid workers from Europe. Many apartments that were for rent for the last several months have been snatched up recently, and at prices higher than originally asked for. And the prices in the colonial zone for apartments have started easing upward again.
-----------------------------Carnival in Santo Domingo has been moved. It is usually the first Sunday after the 27th of February, which is the date Dominicans celebrate their country's independence. Carnival in Santo Domingo is now on Sunday, March 7, 2010.
-----------------------------With the curfew in effect with regards to the sale of alcohol it can be really dead, nightlife-wise, during the week. I just got a copy of the new DR1 guid e (website should be updated next week) and there is an article in there about where to go after-hours in Santo Domingo. They listed two places. One is the Coppa Bar & Lounge, which is located in the Diamante Casino in the Melia Holel on the malecon. It is open every night. But this is an upscale place where proper dress is enforced. There is another place listed, Aurora del sol Hotel & Casino. There is a club at this hotel which is extremely popular. It is open everyday until 6am. I have been to this club and had a great time. The weekends after 2 - 3 am the place is packed and there is a line to get in.
-----------------------------The Sofitel brand is no longer in Santo Domingo. The two hotels, the Sofitel Frances, and the Sofitel Nicholas de Ovando, are now known as the Hotel Frances, and the Hostal Nicholas de Ovando. The hotels are still owned by the Accor chain, but it seems they didn't live up to the Sofitel standards. In any case they are still open and the Hostal Nicholas de Ovando will be having a dinner special for Valentine's Day.
