It is always good when I have people here at the apartments that I genuinely like. That's the case this weekend. Everyone staying here I really like and they are very, very supportive of me. Today we went for a ride. Just drove around the whole city and took some pictures.
Upon finishing our little sightseeing tour we found this most charming store located in the Colonial Zone of Santo Domingo. The store is called Basquiat. It has the all kinds of items for the home, and many other knicknacks, rugs, art, lamps. You name it, they got it. But what I really like about it are the prices. They are very reasonable. If you are looking for something different to take back as gifts, or looking for a lamp that could double as a piece of art, then Basquiat is the place you should definitely check out.
Basquiat is located on Calle Las Mercedes #157, near Calle Maria Hostos. Las Mercedes is one street over from El Conde, the same street that ARENA is located on.
The place is owned by an Italian gentleman, and run by this charming Cuban woman. They don't speak much English, but most of the prices are quoted in dollars. This is the type of store that they need on El Conde, though it would be at home on any smart shopping street of any major city in the world. It is beautifully designed and the building itself has been lovingly restored. Is this a rave, or what?
Check it out and you will be very pleasantly surprised.

FYI: Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960-1988) was born in Brooklyn of a Puerto Rican mother and Haitian father. As a young boy, he used graffiti as an artistic expression. Later, his innovative paintings depicted Haitian, Puerto Rican, and Afro-American themes. There is a museum dedicated to his works in New York and a film about his life was produced in 1996. There is also a lot of information about him on the internet. From the photos, I can see that this store also has a mix of influences in their offerings.

thank you so much for the information. I didn't know his mother was Puerto Rican. I have now went and checked out information about him on the internet.
