Sugar

Sugar, is a film garnering great buzz at this year's Sundance Film Festival. It stars Dominican newcomer, Algenis Perez Soto. From the filmmakers of last year's Half Nelson, the film tells the story of 20 year-old baseball phenom from the Dominican Republic, Miguel "Sugar" Santos. The reviews have been extremely good.

There are even some clips on the Major League Baseball website.

Keep your eye out for some Sugar.

This film seems like a must see. However, since its performed solely in spanish will there be english subtitles? What a plus for the Dominican Republic !!!

In looking at the trailers for the movie, it does not appear to be solely in spanish.

Hey Anthony:

Thanks for this post. While we're talking about baseball, can you fill us in on the Dominican Winter League Championships? I hear los Tigres tied it up with Santiago. Also, What do you know about the upcoming Caribbean World Series that's going to be played in Santiago and santo Domingo? I hear a fair number of major leaguers will be playing for their naitioanl teams. Miguel Tejada for one. Also Manny Ramirez?

What a great opportunity for us Americanos to watch teams composed entirely of young Latinos!

DR1 Travel News for January 22 has all the news about the upcoming series. I just received it in my Inbox today (Jan. 26). It was an email, not a link, so I don't know exactly how you can find it on the DR1 website.

The newsletter said they'll be lifting the curfew in Santiago for the tournament, but not in Santo Domingo. Bummer!
