Policia

Last night, I was stopped by police. I don't know what it is, but I always seemed to get targeted. I was on my way to pick up a friend of mine and about to get on Avenida John F. Kennedy, when I came across a checkpoint. Usually I just keep on driving, but this time they were in the streets with big guns, so I thought it best to stop.

I know what this is about. A little money. There were 4 of them who surrounded my car. I had a friend with me from the States who is Puerto Rican. I gave them all my papers and was trying to remain calm. Unfortunately, there was one who was feeling "it." He wanted to know why I didn't have a Dominican driver's license. He was feeling like this was a "a ha" moment. I started to get upset, but still trying to keep my composure.

Then, one of other police officers breaks in to calm things down. I'm telling them to take me to the police station so that I can call the embassy, yada, yada, yada. Basically talking shit. He told me that wouldn't be necessary and everything was okay and I was free to go. I thanked him, and shook his hand. Before I left, I called him back over and gave him a $20 bill (well, he was cute!). He was shocked, and asked me for my phone number. I then took his.

I then proceeded to go to play pool with some friends. He called and asked what I was doing. i told him where I was, and he just showed up. We talked for a couple of hours and are meeting for lunch today.

I love the police, as long as they are not pulling me over trying to get money from me. LOL!

Wednesday, there was a nationwide strike. I don't know how successful it was, but there was definitely a marked decrease in traffic and noise.

(The photo above is NOT of the 4 who pulled me over)

Hi Anthony,OMG you sure have had some interesting experiences lately, centering around the legal enviroment of Santo Domingo and now the police.I thought these were the four police who pulled you over and I was about to say, how wonderfully excitiing until I read further down your message. On the end it turned out to your benifit, and that too is great, next time I go over you must introduce me to some of his friends, SMILE if that is possible.Keep up the good work and Thanks for keeping us in the loop of happenings over in good Old Santo Domingo.Jim From Houston

Anthony,
Far be it for me to reprimand you for anything you do in DR to survive. But don't you think giving the police the 20 bucks sorta plays into this whole behavior of them always trying to dupe money out of Americans?
Dunno, just see readers of the blog going down there pushing $$$ in police officers's hands. Maybe I'm still ticked off at the behavior of the visitors to Hodelpa, who, because they know the hotel is gay-friendly, have taken their behavior to an annoying and repulsive level. AND NOW THE POLICY RE: GUESTS HAS CHANGED!

Lucky you !!! $20.00 will go a long way. Now you have a friend in the force...And now you can stick your tongue out at the other policemen. The same thing happened to me on the way to Consuello. He was alone and stopped me for no reason...after, asking for my car rental papers and Dr. Licence.I handed him 20.00 To make a long story short, he proceeded with small talk and said if I needed him tonight..."here is my number" Money talks and bullshit is put in jail...LOL

Darling..there is a right way and a wrong way to do it. If its done in the presence of other police officers...of course your ass will be dragged off to jail. On the other hand..like Anthony did, you hand it to him sureptitiously, while no one is looking and watch how you get a smile and a handshake and signalled to move on

Just want to make sure that I'm clear. I have not changed my stance about giving money to the Police (unless you want to).

We had our altercation, they were letting me go, no money asked for or offered.

I gave him the money because I wanted to, not because I felt obligated. I really liked the way he handled the whole situation. He took charge and calmed me and the other officer I was arguing with down. It didn't hurt that he was quite attractive and sexy, either.

We just had a great lunch together and I met some of his friends.

We'll see what happens.

Most of us know....that ONE never gives the politur/national police any MONEY/dinero/pesos/dolars $$$....but what you did do was showed appreciation for his intervention and made him the "star" among his fellow officers that trying to bully a non dominican is NOT always the way to go...! and of course....u are the recipent of a "friendship" & "contact"~~! Those are always invaluable to have expecially when you are not native born~!

Oh well, that was quite a calling card you slipped him and I'm sure that the reward for doing so will be quite BIG, hopefully really big.
