Y Que?

Great weekend. Yesterday was Father's Day here, so happy Father's Day to all the Dominican Daddies. The Merengue Festival was also this past weekend. Wanted to go, but there were tooo many people and the traffic was horrendous. Watched some of it on TV instead. Very nice. Did anyone go to the Dominican Parade in the Bronx yesterday? Did you take any photos? Most of the photos I could find were of beautiful buxom women, but no hot men. What's up with that? The parade in Manhattan will be on Sunday, August 10, 2008.

Everyone is complaining (or maybe it is just me) about the electricity situation rearing its ugly head again. Many parts of the country are experiencing blackouts for upwards of 18 hours PER DAY. President Fernandez, when are you going to straighten out this situation? Until this country gets this fucking problem together it will never be able to modernize. And forget about running a business with interruptions.

Diario Libre, the local free paper, will now have news in English. This is a test run to see how things go. Hope they are able to continue the experiment.

There is another new bar that opened a couple of months ago, called the Whiskey Lounge. The bar is located on Las Mercedes near Sanchez. There were a lot of rumblings that this bar was owned by Orlando, the former owner of Parios. This is not true, it is owned by a Dominican woman. Robinson, who used to be the bartender at Bar Friends, is now working there. Robinson contacted me to meet the owner who is interested in reaching out to the gay community. I have told people to go by and check the place out. It is very nice, but it is not a hustler bar. I will keep you posted.

Here are my latest tips:

Don't get a manicure/pedicure on the beach. It is highly unsanitary and can lead to some serious complications. Here's a hint. Just look at the towel the manicurist is carrying. It is usually quite dirty. There are cases of people getting infected in the best salons in the world. So you can imagine a woman peddling manicures/pedicures on the beach with a dirty towel. I mean really, people.

Don't get into a cab, any cab, without knowing the cost of the ride BEFOREHAND. Cabs in the Dominican Republic don't have meters, so please make sure you understand the cost before you get in. This will save you a lot of headaches.

Please don't give your rental car to a drug addict to go run errands for you. I know this should go without saying, but there are just some people who completely get caught up in the moment.

Okay, here is my last one, and I know it will stir controversy. But, don't play cards at Paco's. It's tacky. Just my observation.

Good news about a new bar. And GREAT news about Robinson. He's a class act and he deserves a better environment than Bar Friends. I used to catch him at Bar Friends when no-one else was there. I'd buy him a beer and we'd talk about everything under the sun. I hope the new bar succeeds and Robinson does well by salary and tips.

Anthony, you are wonderful and your advice is great. First the Whisky Lounge is a place to go but you need to have your man first as there are no hustlers. There are strippers on special occasions. Drinks are priced well. The best part is no begging for bus fare or money for chicken.

What I think is tacky about playing cards at Pacos is then sending someone to Pizza Hut to get something to eat. You are in a restaurant using of their prime tables and send someone for carryout!!! Can you imagine doing that in the states?

LOL @ "Don't play cards at Paco's. It's tacky"

I witness this myself I was like what da fuck!... not Bid wisk!

It's this saying but I changed it..
"You can take the Queen out of the Ghetto, but you can't take the Ghetto out of the Queen!" anywhere even out of the Country!

Anthony, you do keep us informed. I hear the Rona Barrett of DR has finally left those shores for the U.S. I understand that she was the main one at the helm of the card playing!! Hmmm prentended to be soo grand!! One thing worse than an American Grand Sissy is a POOR one, right Syl ???

I think people come to the DR for different reasons. The buggies have gotten out of hand with all the begging and shit. I would welcome someplace different to go and not deal with the bum buggies.

Also i agree that playing cards at Pacos is tacky.

Wouldn't it be great if there were an honest-to-God Colmado that was friendly to gays.....food, music, Presidentes, etc.

Anthony! you never cease to amaze me, I know you can;t make these things up. You should write a book. Glad to hear the wannabes are still "wanting to be!" If you rent a car in a foreign country and then allow a relative stranger to drive it you deserve to loose it, just like letting a hack with a pair scissors and no disinfectant chop away at your toes and fingers they should turn green and drop off. Common sense is good old common sense you either have it or you DON'T!

Thanks my friend and see you in a few weeks.

Care to tell us why you think that about Robinson?

Anonymous said...

I totally dissagree... about Robinson, not the card playing!!

Anonymous said...

There are several colmados that are gay friendly and it is possible to have a good time and even meet some local guys. You just cant be making remarks and groping.

Robinson is a great bartender and has a good personality. Whisky Lounge is going to do well.

Buggies are everywhere!! You don't have to visit DR to run into buggies! They are like roaches! They have to live too. They know who does as well as who WILL support their needs. YOU & ME!! BE REAL...if they are not your forte' JUST SAY NO!!And keep it moving. DR does NOT have a monopoly on Buggies! Get Real!

What ?? YOU MEAN THE FABULOUS MISS SYLVESTER HAS LEFT THE ISLAND ??NO will wonders never cease?? Did the patrons at Pacos take up a collection to purchase her ticket ?

Anonymous said...

Yeah buggies are everywhere and i don't have any problems with those that are trying to make money. I don't like being in a bar with people constantly begging me for money or telling me they are hungry. That is why i don't go to friends or the new place. So it would be nice to have another option where they don't let the bums in.

You can still hang out with them.

YOU ARE SOOOO RIGHT, BUT NOT ONLY THE CARD PLAYING BUT HAVING FOOD AND DRINKS BROUGHT TO YOUR TABLES BY FRANCISCO, AND NOT BUYING ANYTHING FROM PACS, SHAME, SHAME, SHAME

YES, SYLVESTER IS GONE. I WONDER HOW MANY OTHER PEOPLE BESIDES ME THAT ARE OWED MONEY, I GUESS SYL JUST TOOK A PAGE FROM BYRON'S BOOK, SKIPPING OUT ON THE FRIENDS WHO HELPED YOU OUT WHEN THE ATM ATE YOUR CARD FOR THE 10TH TIME THIS YEAR???

I HAVE NEVER BEEN AN ACTIVE PARTICIPANT IN YOUR SITE BUT I HAVE FOUND OUT THAT IF I WANT TRUE INFO, I CAN ALWAYS HIT YOUR SITE.NJ

WELL, I AM GETTING CARRIED AWAY ON YOUR SITE, HOWEVER THE COLMADO ON INDEPENDENCIA ACROSS THE STREET FROM THE DUQUE IS VERY GAY FRIENDLY, SOME OF HAVE MADE IT A REGULAR SPOT. VERY FEW BOOGIES AND COURTEOUS, GOOD LOOKING STAFF

CASKET SHARP said...

Hell naw...the tacky card playing queens got food from someplace else; and sat rigth there and ate it in Paco's face! Hell to the NAWWWW! what kind of shit is that!
I know someone got a picture

CASKET SHARP said...

Byron got you too with that ATM ate card trick, Lawd I was tricked by an American Buggarone.

THE DUQUE IS NOT VERY GAY FRIENDLY ANYMORE, DID THEY FIX THE 2ND FLOOR PROBLEM OF BREAK-INS.

A friend and I stayed at the Duque de Wellington in May because Camilo House had no vacancy. We have always been welcomed there and security has been updated. When your "guest" leaves, front desk calls your room to see if everything is ok before returning his cedula. We are already planning on staying there again in December, but only because Anthony told me he was sold out for those dates.

...Yes, the infamous Sylvester got me too!! I loaned her money in 2005 and have yet to receive a dime. Now I hear she's sick in the hospital. They had better beware that she doesn't try to dupe them with the bill. Tacky, pompous broke bitch!!!

Anonymous said...

Well dam, did Sylvester make a living of trying to beat her sisters?I loaned her 1000 pesos and paid for her meal at Pacos. Add me to the list of 2007. When I was there 2 months ago, she ignored me. Hmm

Why is everyone hating on Sylvester? She is a girl who fell on hard times and became a buggie. Slick, fast talking ho....I lent her 3000 pesos and haven't seen a dime. Rot in hell wherever you are!! I was good to you and you screwed me, telling me which buggie was this n that, all the time gettin' in my purse for food & drinks at Pacos. I guess I was another sucker, huh?Chicago, girl.

That's sad. I remember the first couple of times i met the above mentioned person.. thought he was great and on the ball. on later visits, he did seem aloof and a bit, well, shady.

Unless you're strong, focused, of good humor and resources, DR will beat the life out of you. It ain't for the weak.

I've known too many who've bitten off more than they could choose in DR and headed back home with their tales between their legs. Oh yes.. they'll be back, someday... but don't count on it.

And as far as the other one mentioned above "B", who DIDN"T see that coming a mile away. How's the baby?

NEVER TO STAY AT THE DUQUE THE BEDS HAVE BED BUGS, WHEN I GOT BACK TO THE STATES I WAS COVERED WITH PAIN! I HAD TO SOAK IN A TUB WITH BLEACH!

AND THOSE SINK HOLE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE BEDS.

NEVER AGAIN! CAN YOU VISUAL A BIG GURL LIKE ME ROLLING TOWARDS THE CENTER OF THE EARTH! THANK GOD FOR MY MotionEaze PILLS.

Anonymous said...

the Duque has made a lot of improvements and security is top rate...the colmado across the street is a real social center where you can meet a nice local guy who might or might not want a few pesos.....as to the Paco's card players, their favorite thing was to order pizza from Pizza Hut and have someone bring it to them while they sat in Pacos.

Let's us all pray for Miss Sylvester Paige. case closed.

i will not hate on sylvester! i got my money back from her.let us pray she returns to santo domingo in better health and better financial shape!

Anthony, my dear...I do so enjoy your writings. It is like a return visit with all the beauty (yes) and the warts of a typical day in DR. Thanks so much for making my NYC days a lot more enchanting. Love ya & see you in a few weeks. Melvin

...Miss Sylvester's mental state is at issue. How do you take from your sisters under the guise of being helpful? When in reality you are just like the buggies. Having your selfish needs met ? Yes, Iam mad because I be friended her.

Poor thing, how sick is she??? I am shocked the BIG "queen" is no longer apart of the fixtures at Paco's every afternoon. One bloger said ,she could give ATTITUDE, and yes they were so right in stating that Observation, but again God does not like UGLY.I could tell she was a user but again she never had the chance to use me. I fed her with a long handle spoon for protection reasons (not health reasons but user reason)since I could tell she was not quite all she pretented to be, enough dishing.I do hope she does well and makes a complete recovery.
