Esmailyn Gonzalez

The young Dominican guy in this picture used to be known as Esmailyn Gonzalez. He was considered a top prospect and was signed to a $1.4 million dollar signing bonus with the Washington Nationals. He was supposed to be 16 at the time he signed the contract. Well, it has been revealed that his name is really Carlos Alvarez Daniel Lugo, and he is now 23 years old. I bet there are some really angry people in the Washington Nationals organization right now. Click here to read the whole sordid story.

typical of dominicans to lie-such a long history in sports even in little league.

Say There, don't these people in the Dominican Republic know that sooner or later the truth will catch up with them. This could have bad re-percussions for this young baseball player and finish his career before it even begun.Very sad indeed, when are these young people going to learn it does not pay to lie to anyone about anything, becasue someone is either going to blow the whissel(sp) on you or someone is going to investigate your background for the truth.I hope it does not mess his future up however, if it does who does he have to blame but himself.A sad lesson learned the hard way.JIM From Houston, Tx.

His career is over. I hope he invested that signing bonus well.

what, you wouldn't falsify some documents to move from an impovershed life in a third world country to be an american millionaire? bottom line: the nats keep a talented player, the player keeps the money, and the major league baseball and their scum bag local DR "associates" need to answer for their "slave trade" practices in recruiting children to play baseball.

There are a group of men who may be ex-players and others associated with MLB whose job is to scout for young prospects in different countries. They are called "buscones" to those in the know. They are hustlers who get part of the profits if the new prospect is signed with a Major League team. Not too long ago, I was in a restaurant in SD and two older men along with four young guys (all wearing baseball caps) were at the table next to mine. The older men were telling the guys how much money they would make and the perks they would receive once they were signed on by such and such team. One of the older men had cheap "gold" rings on most of his fingers, but anyway, the young guys were all wide eyed listening to the promises of money and fame. I would not put it past any of those old farts to falsify information on a birth certificate or any other document just to get their hands on some money!

According to listindiario.com he just got his new "corrected" passport and will soon be on his way to the Major Leagues. All is forgiven. Money talks, bullshit
walks...especially in the DR.

Some real hating against Dominicans on here. Posters - not Anthony - needs to watch the nasty comments about Dominicans all cheating. You wouldn't want that said about White Americans or African Americans or Puertoricans or any other group. So don't slam a nation of over nine million people just cause a few people makes some mistakes. The multibillion dollar major league baseball system exploit young Dominicans day in day out. Shouldn't they be taking the blame instead of the entire Dominican people?

Name the post where you say it talks "about Dominicans all cheating." You know what? You won't find it because nobody wrote that. Some Dominicans cheat like some people do in any other country. So, get off your soapbox and quit your preaching!

Those of us who visit the DR on a regular basis know and have experienced the friendships, kindnesses and warmness of the Dominican people. Yes, there are some liars and rascals there also. I dont have to leave my building in the U.S. to find the same thing...so I agree, for those who post general anti Dominican statements, go somewhere else.......
