Jack Phillips is Missing

Jack Phillips, pictured above, is missing. He is originally from New Haven, Connecticut, but has property and spends a fair amount of time in the Dominican Republic. He traveled to the country on January 13, 2009, but no one has seen him. His family has contacted the American Embassy in Santo Domingo. If anyone has seen him please send me an email and I will forward the information to the right people.

Thanks Anthony. Do you know where he lived or stayed? Last seen? I have seen the photo on the right of him, but do not remember where?

I did look at Robert's Forum thinking it was in there, but could not find. Perhaps you can have him post something also?

Regards.

Hello Jim and others,

According to Anthony in his original post, Jack has property here in the Dominican Republic and spends a fair amount of time here. So I can only guess that he knows people here and his way around.

Even though my wife and I have been here over 12 years and know many people, we can not keep track of everyone and not everyone wants to be kept track of. People all over the World go missing all the time; some on their on accord for their own reasons. Let us hope that this is the situation. Jacks' missing should not be a reflection of the Dominican Republic. I think that this Monaga Blog shows alot of good and positive things about our homes here.

As I asked in my above post, us knowing where he lived, stayed and last know where abouts could help us that live here keep a better watch for him; as I'm sure most of us down here would do and do for each other when needed.

Regards, John

Hi John , I no way met it was a reflection on the Dominican Republic,(I have visited there many times and it is has safe has Houston or any other place however, one needs to be careful with a watchful eye at all times) I met any time you visit any place, it is always good to let people know your where abouts and whom your with, just good common sence(sp). This is sad to say but the real world we live in.I am just praying he is OK and safe.Bless his heart.JIM from Houston, Tx.

Living alone in ANY country - even your own - can be dangerous. Look at all the home invasions that are going on in the US nowadays.

denial about the DR is not the way to go. yes it is fun and a beautiful country but too many(locals especially the men)don't have respect for the lives of those who are not native dominicans, it's the same in south america and other 3rd world countries but let's stop sugar coating how safe the DR is, it is not, read DR1. I have heard many horror stories over the 15 years I stayed in the DR and the DR gov't could careless.

Anonymous said...

You are right. Living alone, even in your own country can be dangerous. But at least you have a network of family, friends, acquaintances, and authorities that will probably deal with your disappearance/illness/death with concern. Has his family come down from Connecticut to check out what happened to him? Let's hope so. Do you think Dominican authorities give a damn about the whereabouts of this (gay?) man when many times they don't even care about their own people? I seriously doubt it. Once again, I hope this ends well for Mr. Phillips.

This Craig here in Santo Domingo. James and I went by Jack's house today and spoke with neighbors regarding sightings. Unfortunately no one has seen anything, no lights, no presence of any person being at the house. I do wish the police would make an entry though and check the interior. Biggest problem is Jack always used the side gate of the building and I know his bedroom is in the far back corner (or used to be) so no one looking in through windows will be able to see anything. We are trying to get more information to pass along to the family if such is desired.

Regards

Craig and James:

Are you saying nobody's been able to check inside his home even though he's been missing for quite some time now? The first thing the police should do when someone is reported missing is make sure he's not in the house. Surely the US Embassy can help in getting someone from the police to go into the house to see if everything is in order there.

Anonymous said...

I am totally confused as to why this investigation into the disappearance of Jack Phillips has not started at the most logical place; his apartment. The man may be dead in the apartment the victim of a murder, but possibly of natural causes. He was not young. It is ridiculous to even talk further about this man's disppearance until the obvious is at least looked into.

Anonymous said...

My thoughts exactly! Several years ago, a good friend of mine did not answer his phone over the weekend. He was found dead of natural causes in his apartment by his sister on Monday morning. Very sad, but these things do happen.

Anonymous said...

I absolutely agree. We've been trying to get the police to check inside the apartment but from what Lynn told me all they've done is look into the first floor windows which shows absolutely nothing of his living quarters. I understand Jacks son is coming down here and maybe between that and the embassy and police contacts they will actually check the apartment (something we've all been asking for since this all first started).

I hope this turns out ok. It all sounds a bit fishy though. All of it.

Monaga said...

Maybe some of the things I'm about to suggest have been done. I am addressing this to Jack's family.

It occurs to me that it can be determined with certainty if Jack passed through customs in the Dominican Republic. Has this been done?

The American Embassy should be able to find that information right away. If it is determined that he definitely came through customs and there is no record of him leaving.

Someone from his family, or another person who can represent his interests, should be here in the Dominican Republic NOW. The only way you are going to get the Dominican authorities to take this seriously, is if they have been made to understand how serious this is. That, in my opinion, cannot be done on the telephone.

Here's a suggestion to get the local cops involved; simply tell them that you suspect that there are drugs, guns, or minors in the house; they'll get their greedy, corrupt asses in there quick enough, believe me! Other than that, I truly pray that jack turns up ok; he is truly a kind and generous soul.

It's sad what has happend to Jack, I pray that his body turns up so his family can have closure....

Anonymous said...

What problems would those be? If you know something, the decent thing to do would be to tell me, his sister, or one of his "friends". The problem is...I don't think there are any decent people anywhere or anyone with a conscience. It's sad.

Anonymous said...

I agree.. what was Jack into? What "problems" have also gone away with his disappearance? Is there anything you know that might perhaps shed light onto his disappearance. It seems he may have had enemies who may have wanted him gone. Why would anyone wish to murder him? Please, come forward. Any information may help the family and the authorities understand why and what happened to Jack.

Anonymous said...

Guys I went thru a similar case. A friend of mine went missing for 3 weeks in a town near Santo Domingo (don't remember the name). He called his dad and told him that he was taking the bus back to Santo Domingo and no one heard from him since then. He was later found by the police and it seems that he was going thru a depression due to bad investements. I hope everything goes well with Jack and that he voluntarily took the decision of going away for a while. In the case of my friend the police and the American Embassy traced his cell phone.

Anonymous said...

I really don't understand why anyone would say such a thing "that with Jack gone so have other problems". Jack was a basic good person, he had his difference with some, but then would just tend to avoid them and the problem. He cared about those he called friends, and those less fortunate. We should do everything we can to comfort his family not anger them with such comments. A needless and unfounded comment. Let us all use this forum to inform.

Does anybody know alberto?? what's his deal

Anonymous said...

I'm pretty convinced he's a murderer.

Anonymous said...

jeez does anybody know anything?? Is the family decide that it was time to come down or what? Feel bad for the guy, he's missing and his friggan family is still in the US thinking they get things done..With family like that maybe the guy just ran away!!!

Anonymous said...

I think this maybe an unfair statement. We do not know the situation of the family. It is apparent from the forum that they are very conerned and care very much for Jack. I am sure there are good reasons why they have not appeared and will most likely surface when the timing is right. If there is a murderer at large, who is to say how desperate this person or persons maybe. Let's not judge them until all the facts are known. The investigation in ongoing and hopefully the people involved in Jack's disappearance will be found and prosecuted.

Anonymous said...

Thinking Mr. Phillips "just ran away" from his family is very naive and wishful thinking. Mr. Phillips is a victim of foul play. I think people there should put their heads together and try to help solve this "disappearance." There is a murderer out there and who knows who the next victim will be.. Think about that won't you?

Anonymous said...

Who exactly is Alberto? What was his relationship to Jack? Boyfriend? Employee? Both? Does anyone have any facts or ideas? Any information or even speculations no matter how unimportant should be discussed. Until this disappearance is solved everyone of us down here is in danger of meeting the same fate as Jack..there is a murderer among us..

Anonymous said...

I have been thinking about Jack and I am personally scared. I do not wish to become a statistic like Jack. Does anyone know something??? I am afraid to walk the streets of SD and must confess I am always looking over my shoulder. Is this the way to live one's life?

Anonymous said...

Alberto was Jack's house caretaker who Jack trusted immensely. It's thought that as soon as Jack got to SD, he wasn't happy with something Alberto did or didn't do and fired him. Isn't it a coincidence that Alberto's disappearance coincided with Jack's disappearance? Alberto has been found and is a suspect. Do the math.

Anonymous said...

It seems Alberto may have knowledge of Jack and his fate. Is he in police custody? I do believe you are innocent until proven guilty, but the evidence maybe stacked up against Alberto..does anyone else know anything?

Anonymous said...

I am still concerned about Jack and his where abouts. This is the first time I have heard anything about this so called person by the name of Alberto ,along with Jack having him for a care taker.Does anyone know if the police and investigators still actively working this case??Is the FBI involved along with the American Consolete?? I just wish we had some postive news one way or the other however maybe the police know more than they are willing to share at this particular point in there investigation??I am still praying for a positive outcome.May God give the family the strength to conti' there vigil efforts in finding there love one, this has to indeed very difficult on all of them, Bless there tearful hearts.JIM from Houston, Tx.

I agree with you Rafael. This is a terrible thing for the family of Jack Phillips. It is the not knowing which makes it more difficult. If there was a body then at least there is closure. It has to be very frustrating and also someone out there seems to incite anger with callous remarks. I think the fate of Jack Phillips maybe a puzzle for a while longer. Hopefully, questions will be answered soon.

Anonymous said...

If someone doesn't show up for two months, I assume they've been murdered. In this particular case, Jack's son and daughter and I have reasons to believe he was in fact murdered. Jack has this bad habit of trying to right the wrongs in his world and doesn't think about the consequences. He likes to "save" people. When he was 15 years old, he jumped from a boat in the middle of a lake to try to save someone who went overboard and almost died himself. In New York City at night, he tried to stop a guy with a butcher knife who was trying to kill someone, putting his own life in jeopardy. It worked. He jumped onto the NY Subway tracks to save a woman who was pushed off the platform. It worked. He went to Colombia, South America, to adopt 2 children, saving them from a life of poverty, putting them through fine schools, and today they are fine, sensitive adults with their own families. I tried to save him from the beatings he got from my father just for no reason when he was young. It didn't work. We formed a strong bond in childhood. He was my hero. I miss him and love him. The purpose of my life is gone. I'm not being overly dramatic, as suggested on the DR1 site. I'm telling it like it is.

To Jack's sister,
Someone in a previous post wrote about a friend who had disappeared for some time due to depressive illness and was later found. Could it be your brother just wanted to get away from it all from some unknown reason? I have a good friend who suffers from depressive illness and for days he will not answer the telephone or even open the door for me and we have been friends for over 27 years! Until evidence proves otherwise, you must believe your brother is alive and will be reunited with those who love him. God bless.

I wish there were some way to help this family in a positive way. There are many commets on here that are supportive for the family however, the only real positive thing would be to have Jack back in what ever form that may be.I guess what I am trying to say without being hurtful(to the family) is that if some one disappears into the night?? does not show up after 72 hours along with no traces of any evidence for the investigators to follow up, then it brings about a dem ray of hope for a postive results on the end.I still pray for a good ending to this and my prayers go to the family that God will give them the strength to get through this bad nightmare.Put all this in the hands of the Lord, like I do when faced with huge Challenges in my life.JIM from Houston, Texas

Anonymous said...

Rafael, thanks for your comment and Jim, also. Yes, he was very depressed, but being in Santo Domingo always made him happy. He loved all his friends there and talked about them constantly. He wanted to move there, but certain people were very much against it. As a matter of fact, he was ripped off by a couple of people he thought were his friends and was trying to get back what belonged to him. He was not a violent person and would never hurt anyone. Sometimes his anger got the best of him and he said things that weren't very nice, but he was always willing to forgive if he were being treated fairly.

Jack Phillips could be very kind and thoughtful. Jack Phillips also had another side to him. He could be insensitive and a bully. If he was angry he could be unforgiving and down right cruel. With this dicotomy of personalities I can see him having problems. When Jack felt he was right, there was no talking him out of it. He could be very tunnel visioned. I suspect this may have been his undoing. There is no question in my mind that he had people who did not like him and wanted him gone. I don't think we are going to see Jack again. It is very sad... underneath it all Jack was a very dear man.

Anonymous said...

The statement, "There is no question in my mind that he had people who did not like him and wanted him gone" is an indicator that you suspect more than one person who would not only be glad to see Mr. Phillips leave Santo Domingo, but be glad to see him dead as well. There are probably people who would not care to see me ever again, but having me killed is another thing. Would someone have him killed because of a petty disagreement? Probably not. If Mr. Phillips was indeed killed, it would have to be something much more serious involving money, property, or other things that I will not mention for fear of offending his family. I suggest your letting them know who you suspect, if you have not done so already. You can do so anonymously without getting involved yourself.

Anonymous said...

Who? Can you give names? Or like Michael Musto in the VVoice post blind items about who may be a suspect? Are these other expats? On so many levels this is an intriguing story.

This is not to take away from the very serous nature of this missing person or what his family must be going through. No offense intended.

But, DAMN! That island is a MESS! Don't forget to pack your bullet proof vest and brass knuckles along with sunscreen!

"dominican neighbors had no compassion or are they used to living around FOUL odors and just heartless?" It has been reported that he was shot and then burried under concrete so probraby there was little or no smell. Most dominicans don't care much for gay men, prostitutes, or drug addicts and if you happen to fall in any of those categories chances are most dominicans will consider write you off as scum. Its sad but is the truth.

Anonymous said...

I dont believe there were odors because he was interred ina one of the rooms that was being renovated and so the flooring was being changed. Jack was buried in a blue tarp in a hole covered with cement. The police did not find him because the house has lots of new cement everywhere. It would not have been obvious. After 2 months, they came back yet again (4th time searching)with sniffing dogs and they identified where he was buried. I dont belive the police is incompetent. They don't have too many leads. They brought in several people for questioning but Jack did not leave too many clues as to who would do this crime. Perhaps it may even have been an unknown person, maybe a worker, who knows.

I don't understand why people find it so hard to believe that there are folks who may know information, but are afraid to tell. This happens all the time in the United States, especially in "da hood". There are thousands of unsolved murders, because people are afraid to come forward. Also, if the witnesses view the victim as less than innocent, they may feel less guilt in coming forward. As for the criticisms of the domincan cops, seems like some of the commenters have been watching too much CSI. Cops in the US screw up investigations all the time, they miss critical evidence, and they contaminate crime scenes.

If some people are happy saying obnoxious things about Jack, I feel sorry for you. Hate is destructive. The police have several suspects, the names of whom I am unable to disclose. I want to thank those who were/are concerned about what happened to my dearest brother and best friend.

To The bloger of March 21st.01:50:00, you so right on about what happens here in the U.S.,so many times. Just watch one Show of "48 Hours" on A&E and you shall see, however, they are extremely careful with evidence on that show because they know it's being filmed for TV.I have little or no knowledge of how the Dominican Police work and there investigation teams, so really can not make a judgement about them.I do feel strongly and have since I heard of Jack's disappearence that someone does know something yet, possible fearful of coming forward with what they know.Maybe because they do not want to get involved or be implicated in any way. However,if they are innocent then have no fear,do the right thing, come forward and help resolve Jack's murder. This would also help give the family closure, if that's possible.JIM from Houston, Tx.

Jack Phillips has been murdered in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic on January 13 th 2009.
Santo Domingo.– The body of an American citizen was found buried under a layer of cement inside his home in Santo Domingo, a police spokesman told the press.

Jack Phillips, 60, was found at about 12:30 p.m. Thursday in a room of his apartment on Pasteur Street in the Dominican capital. His body was wrapped in blue canvas and covered with cement, and in the same room a shell casing from a 9mm pistol was found.

Investigators went to the victim’s home with tracking dogs, which located the body in an advanced state of decomposition. An employee in the consular section of the U.S. Embassy in Santo Domingo reported Phillips missing on Jan. 13, the police spokesman said

It's so terrible what people will do to one another for money. Jack never had a chance; God rest his soul and I hope his family can find peace. We think money is a blessing but in reality it can be a curse; how sad.

I am shocked and hurt to hear of Jacks death. He had a real joy for living and was a very kind and thoughtful man. I miss him.

I still cannot believe that Jack is gone. It has been three months. I expect any minute to hear his laughing voice. I also am angry. I am angry at the persons who did this to him. Horrible. I hope that they receive all that is coming to them. Jack, was full of life and had more energy than anyone I know. He was robbed of the good times still ahead of him. He was robbed of his relationships with the people who cared about him. His family and friends will miss him forever. Jack, rest in peace and know you will be missed.
