Working the Colmado

For the longest I have heard about drag queens performing in local colmados on the weekend. I have been dying to see them in person, but I always find out about them after the fact. I just couldn't imagine this taking place in some ghetto in the U.S.A. I found a video of some gay people "carrying on" at a colmado. The other video is just cute to me.

Enjoy!

Actually, the crowd seems to be having a good time. They don't seem to be laughing at the dancers; why would they?

Sounds like projecting your own insecurities about having a good time and being yourself in public- even if it does take a few Presidentes to do so.

Yes, I can see this happening in any ghetto.. having been "in the ghetto" and pretty much every other kind of hood in the world, it's usually the bourgsie middle class that shuns gay. Especially effeminate gay.

Somebody - a poster - is projecting. The men watching the dancers - bailarinas - didn't and couldn't take their eyes off them for one second. It looked to me like everyone was having a ball. The chiquita even joined them. Sorry to see that someone - Debi Deprimida - wants to rain on it cause she has her own issues.

They could not care less what people think...they are having a good time, and that's what matters. "Accepted?"
Who gives a shit? At least they are not in the "closet" pointing fingers and criticizing. We gay people have to be accepting and support each other, or join Cardinal what's his name and his bunch of gay bashers.

Insecurities? True.I have several to deal with. Deprimida? Yeah, sometimes I don't feel like all that. Oh, by the way, when someone is on a ledge on a 23rd floor and about to jump, some people can not take their eyes off them either. Some people even call out to the person to jump! Some people just enjoy seeing others making fools of themselves. Just a question: When was the last time any of YOU carried on like this in a non-gay, public place? Never. Right? I rest my case.

I must add to this ,just looks like everyone is having a ball ,drinking there Presidente's and enjoying the social event of the evening.Looks like a rather fun place to stop in for some good times when visiting Good old Santo Domingo. To be honest "Queens" made the way for all of us to walk the streets openly and free, don't you agree???Again it all depends where you are and who you are around, we must be respectful to ,even at Paco's..remember the incident where one guy or man kissing another in a public place, that was going just going way or a bite too far.If we give repsect we on the end shall gain repect in return, even if it's a person who exhibits a different behavior like the so call "Queens" in public dancing and having a fun time.It is normal to want to have a great time just remember where you are. This,
of course, this is just my perseption or views on this so call fun and dancing in public.Enjoy the weekend.

8:45..., Please !!how does jumping off a roof compare to dancing and making a fool of oneself? Even if I would not do it myself.. I would never frown on anyone who has the nerve to do it..for God's sake..its only dancing !!!When 2 women do the same thing would anyone comment so negatively? who are they hurting?...some people are so prudish, closed minded and so easily offended..This is 2009..not 1909.

I have had conversations with several straight Dominicans who have told me about gays who were dancing among themselves at the local colmado. I too think that the crowd is also having a good time. And I agree, I might not have the gumption to do it, but I applaud those that do.

For me, this is one of the ways that people see that gay people are just like everyone else. And it has always been drag queens and effeminate gays who are in the forefront.

That's just my 2 cents.

It's kind of creepy that some bitter old queen would look down on a young gay man for being himself, especially in front of his own people.

Who's to say it wasn't an entire family hanging out at that bar just having a good time?

If you can only compare a kid dancing and haven't a good time to someone JUMPING OUT A WINDOW and the crowds reaction to that spectacle You got issues dude No matter what the circumstances dancing and having a good time is what life is about. ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU'RE YOUNG. Before you turn into an old sour puss.

Sounds like life didn't quite work out for someone.

It's really sad when people who have no valid arguments to back up their point of view resort to name calling...Debi Depimida, prudish, close minded, bitter old queen, and old sour puss to name a few. And one even went so far as to write that "we have to be accepting and support each other." Now, is that a joke or what!?

I'm not going to call anyone by any names, but I do think that Rafael may be reading more into the videos than is there. The first video appears to show people enjoying the young men dancing, and at the end, as another poster says, a young woman joins them. In the second video, it's all about the dancer. Yes, the first video's title is insulting, but I attribute that more to the video poster than the crowd. Also, it might just be me, but I didn't see or hear anyone jeering, calling them by negative epithets, or even subtly mocking them, which would have been captured on camera. Instead, as is the case in everyday life, the people at the Colmado, whatever their sexuality, are dealing with these young men on terms that can't be reduced simplistically to ridicule or rejection. Comparing their response to people viewing someone jumping out a window or the young dancers to clowns and buffoons is a stretch, and does almost sound like a projection of personal fears and anxieties onto this crowd. Are out gay people of whatever age not supposed to be themselves, and can they not be appreciated as such by others, straight, gay, queer, bi, trans, or however they define themselves?

No! No! No! You people have got me all wrong! I'm really "out" there! Why does anyone think that I have any "insecurities" "fears" or "anxieties" when apparently nobody else who has posted here does? I am what I am and people can take it or leave it. As a matter of fact, yesterday I went to the bank wearing my Las Vegas showgirl outfit just like the rest of YOU. So there!

P.S. Thanks to John for his response. Good reading!

Rafael...please don't take it personal...Its just that there is nothing wrong with a few young gay people having a little fun among themselves. When I look at the video I can see only one obviously gay boy.And of course, you, as well as anybody else has the right to express your opinion.Do not get all stressed out about it.

Thanks for your concern. But do you really think that I take all this criticism on a personal level especially from a bunch of people who I do not even know? No, my dear, I don't. I could care less what they call me. On the contrary, I have had some good laughs reading some of the posts calling me insecure or this and that as if they were always on top of their game 100% of the time. This world would be a very boring place if we all thought and acted the same, don't you think? And look at the number of responses! Not that I don't believe what I initially wrote, but sometimes you gotta light a fire under them to get them started. Thanks again!
