Earthquake in Haiti

First, I am fine. Thank you to everyone who called and sent messages. I was not in Santo Domingo when the quake happened. I was in Bonao. I got a text message saying that there was an earthquake in Haiti. But there are always little quakes in the Dominican Republic, and I didn't think it was that serious. I got back tonight at 11:32 pm (Dominican Time) and checked the internet and saw how incredibly serious this is. I spoke with people who were here in Santo Domingo, and everyone said they felt it. It was that strong. The fault line runs across the entire southern part of the island. The Dominican Republic was spared. Santo Domingo runs on that fault on the eastern part of the island. Why can't Haiti get a break?

Video of the devastation in Haiti

Once daybreak hits the true toll of this earthquake will begin to be learned. I have been all over the internet and what is being reported is just as devastating as can be imagined. Haiti has sure had its share of natural disasters in the last few years. They haven't even recovered from the tropical storms of a couple of years ago. And now this. There are going to be many appeals made for donations over the next days, weeks and months. One I think is worth considering is the Batey Relief Alliance. An organization that I have written about several times on this blog. They are already here on the ground and have a support system and staff already mobilizing resources. Another to consider is musician Wyclef Jean's Yele Haiti foundation. Of course there are many other options like the Red Cross.

Thanks for the donation links, Anthony. I am going to make a donation to Wyclef's organization, and I am encouraging my employer to make a corporate donation. This is a horrific traged - almost beyond human comprehension, and Haiti desperately needs the world's help right now.

I have been watching this develop and pictures on CNN since yesterday afternoon and dear God, what a sad horrific sitauion these poor people are in,My heart and prayers are with them has they attenpt to make some type of recovery while working with so little.I heard President Obama say this morning that we had already sent some first aid aircraft and the Good Hope Hospital Ship was about to leave port to provide medical treatment. They are saying right now here on CNN thats whats needed is water, food and medical aid badly.Such a tragic place that has to be and so little to work with for recovery.God Bless those left behind and all those who are hurt and need attention.MY heart goes out to them.

Today has been a very sad day with this earthquake in Haiti; let’s keep them in our prayers. We are so blessed in so many ways. So keep them in your prayers. They have not recovered from the tropical storms and now to have this disaster to happen. If you like to help just send a text “HAITI” to “90999” and $10.00 will be given automatically to the Red Cross. Charged to your cell phone bill.

Hi Anthony,

You would be proud to see the news coverage and the generosity of your fellow americans in Boston, the 3rd largest Haitian Community. Boston has now surpassed donations in more than $3,000,000 US Dollars dedicated to solely to the Haiti Relief, the UN World food Program, the American Red Cross and the total continues to rise. Tom Brady, the quarterback for the New England Patriots and his Brazilian girlfriend Giselle donated $1.5 Nillion dollars in cash to Haiti. Our elecrric company National Grid has donated $100,000 and there are so many more that are still being tabulated to improve the life and help Haiti during this crisis of Bibilical Proportions. We are proud here in Boston to help those less fortune. The gay community raised more than $435,000 in Boston and prsented the check to the Haitian Relif Fund. The raising of funds to turn Haiti's future around is in the works in the USA even though the economy is terrible and had never been worse. You should be proud that your country has come to the Aid of the Haitians and without mention of race, skin color, economic or political problems. It is a great Humanitarian effort that will hopefully improve the life of the Haitians as they rebuild. My heart aches for the high loss of life and hope that President Obama allows the 400,000 orphans to come to the USA, as is being discussed, to be adopted and given a better life and an education without limited resources. Let us hope that the Gay community who can afford to raise some of these children and give them a good life will be allow to adopt and provide love, security and a solid future as heirs since most of us literally have no one to leave our estates to.

Your friend,

Jimmy Hunter from Lowell, MA
