Memorial Day Weekend

This past weekend was very interesting. I ran the Sports Bar while David went to D.C. to help Vicki with her parties for Pride weekend. Things went smoothly and it was really nice seeing some old and new faces.

Many friends came down to visit and today they left on a trip to the Samana region. I´m jealous. I couldn´t go because I am working at the Sports Bar tonight for David (he arrives this evening!!!), but maybe I will take a bus up there tomorrow afternoon. We´ll see. In any case, I have given everyone explicit instructions to take as many pictures as possible of any and everything. I, of course, will decide what will be published here. Hopefully, they will get some nice pics for me to share.

Next week, there will be a couple of parties at the Sports Bar for birthday celebrations. I am talking with David about turning the smoking area into a ¨lap dance/stripper lounge.¨David hasn´t said yes or no, but he is thinking about it. Of course, I would help get all the best strippers we can, using my considerable connections to the stripper community. If you would like to see some strippers at the Sports Bar, send David an email to let him know. Or, maybe you don´t like that sort of filth. Either way, tell him what you think.

I was pleasantly surprised by how many gay tourists were here this weekend. With big parties in D.C., Miami and San Juan, PR, I thought it wouldn´t be that many here. But, if you were on the Conde you saw the folk out in droves. There were even a group I saw over in the barrio, looking for right Colmado, I´m sure. Anyway, it was great to get a good crowd coming down. We are now in the summer doldrums and it probably won´t be another big group here until July 4th weekend. As I have said over and over again, there is something for everyone.

Came across a very interesting blog while reading the blog Blabbeando. Check out Sangroncito, who is a ¨compulsive traveller.¨Right now he is exploring Colombia.

Once David is back in-charge of the bar, I should be blogging and posting pictures more often.

Until soon,
Me

Hey Anthony--Love the idea of a stripper/lap dancer area at the Sports Bar but do you think this could bring unwanted police attention? Might the police use this as an excuse to harrass or even arrest both strippers and their patrons? I don't know how the police force works in the DR but I do know that policemen in most Latin American countries are just looking for something like this in order to intimidate gays and places where gays hang out. Any comments? BTW--being well-contected to the Dominican male-stripper community: My idea of Heaven :) !

Thanks Anthony for the new blog. I was suffering from withdrawal symptoms from not reading anything new. I admit I am addicted to your blog and need my fix regularily. I took a trip to Samana a few years back to do research on the African-american slaves who immigrated to the area in the 1800's, but alas, wasn't able to find out much as the people in that area are not open to outsiders. Also, I am not Dominican and my spanish is limited, but I did enjoy exploring the different villages and beaches. By the way I like strippers, and lap-dancers.

I vote for lap dances too. Anthony, I will be there 24-31 July. Would like to stay for an extra week but the airlines wanted to charge me an extra $200. So after I leave, I am going to San Antonio for a week to see my Mexican papi's before I head to Germany in August. My BDAY is 4th of July and I would love to get a lap dance when I get there. Talk to you soon..

Anthony-Thanks so much for helping David while he was gone and I know you did it well!!!. Emm, Lap Dance, sounds like a Business Partner Meeting with David , Vickie and myself :) Well, arrive today and can't wait to see everyone and have my BD party this Sat. Again, thanks for all your help, David Brownlee aka: Davanita

No, no, no strippers/lap dances. Leave well enough alone! I agree with the first poster...unwanted attention to the business both by police and other undesirable, underground elements. If it ain't broke, don't try to fix it! Let the strippers stay at Jay Dee's and other places. They are not so great anyway.

Want to make sure that everyone understands that this is JUST a suggestion. David, and his partners (David B. & Vicki) will make any decisions on what will/should be done.

Hi Anthony,

An occassional stripper night, maybe once a week or once every two weeks would be okay but I like the "Pool Hall" atmosphere and would hate to see David change it into a Dominican Chippendales. I would rather see David add a little more seating for his customers than spend the money on strippers.

Anonymous said...

I agree with the posters that say leave well enough alone. Let the Sports Bar - SDQ remain just that... "A Sports Bar". Additional seating and pool tables should be a higher priority.

Anonymous said...

The people who are saying no to the strippers aren't considering that David faces a lot of competition. The great atmosphere and pool tables by themselves might not bring in enough tourist traffic. Many of the Dominicanos cannot afford to buy the liquor in the quantities needed to sustain the business, plus many of the tourists flock to other spots that have strippers or other kinds of entertainment. Anthony's suggestion is a very reasonable one. More pool tables and seating won't do the trick. But Dominican baseball players, boxers and sprinters stripping just might.

Anonymous said...

I have to agree with the other poster! we dont need stripper! They are not so great anyway! What we need is a better aircondition and better seating! May be a new paint job fresh it up! Clean the bathrooms!

Anonymous said...

I agree that seating is an issue if you stop by between 8:30 pm until about 10:30pm when some of the boys then go to Friends Bar or to Jay-Dees if they open. If The Sports Bar is open and the others closed the place can get rather packed and there is not enough seating. You are sometimes forced to go outside to the "patio" area and even then your lucky sometimes to find a seat to rest. I am not worried about the paint...just would be nice to be able to sit down and chat with friends or tourists who are in town and get to know one another. Other than that I like the place and especially like David as he is always very happy and welcoming to his clients.

Anonymous said...

I thought the patio area are for negotiations. hahaha.

Seriously, given the small number of tourists and the lack of local customers, I doubt that having a strip show may work that well. As another poster commented, the guys move from bar to bar following the few tourists.

I do like the idea of making the area more like a lounge area. Maybe adding a tv with sports programming (but just not too loud). It is after all, a sports bar.

Anonymous said...

Yeah Watching Sports would be great especially if you bring in some of those Hot Dominican Baseball Players we see on the Red Sox and Yankees! Now if we can that type in Jock Straps playing sports in the Bar that would bring a real crowd. I want to be the CATCHER at home plate...just be careful because I may grab the wrong balls!

Anonymous said...

OK I'll sign up to be in the game too. I want to be the "BAT" boy. And I wash all jock straps for the team for free after the game. All they need to do is take them off in front of me and hand them to me.
HA-HA

Anonymous said...

I volunteer to wash the balls..........and get all of that sweat off of them. There is nothing worse than trying to play baseball with damp balls. As to the strippers, I fear that it would stir up some neighbors who already are uneasy about having us in their neighborhood. I like the bar just like it is...........even if sometimes the music is a little too loud.

Anonymous said...

As others have mentioned, some additional seating would be a plus. A few more pool tables would be great, but David would have to knock out a wall or two to fit them in. I believe that each bar has there own niche in gay SD nightlife...first, you go to the Sports Bar to warm up until 12:00 or 1:00 am, then you move on to Jay Dees until 3:00, and from there to Arena until you drop from exhaustion or get lucky...
From Puerto Rico,
Rafael
PS: I hope David is reading all these ideas and suggestions.

ok...interesting! How about a kiss and cry area?

Now u all know i'm jiving around ;)

The Sports Bar is the Sports Bar. Don't turn it into something it isn't. Also, hiring strippers (if you have to pay them in the DR)could be an extra cash drain on David.

How about the occasional Amateur stripper or go-go dancer contest? Let the local amateurs dance for a cash prize that's augmented by tips. For each drink sold, give the customer a ticket that he/she then gives to whatever contestant he likes the best. The contestant with the most tickets wins the cash prize. All the other dancers get their tips.

But don't let this diversion take over the wonderful atmosphere that is now The Sports Bar. Maybe for 60 or 90 minutes one night during each holiday weekend when tourists abound.

Time for clarification. Forgive me for not being more specific.

I was talking about strippers when there will be a lot of tourists in town. Memorial Day weekend, July 4th weekend, for instance.

Great comments.

Many of the clubs already do the stripper thing. To be honest I would prefer to see a "Hollywood Star" drag show where the TV's dress up to look like Liza Minelli or Dolly Parton or Judy Garland or Marilyn Monroe or Diana Ross etc...
and get tipped and have a chance at winning a grand prize or gift certificate to buy more make-up, dresses, wigs, etc...One thing that is really missed here in SD is that there are no really good drag shows.

I am listening and on behalf of my business partners, Davinita & Miz Vicki, I want to thank you all for the wonderful and varied suggestions. Right now I'm working on the completion of phase I of the garden parject, just in time for Davinita's Birthday party this Saturday, June 3, from 8pm-2am. The Sports Bar has Happy Hour Prices all Summer long and the special of the night is "Any Drink Free, With The Entrance Fee", which includes "Top Shelf". So if you are in SDQ this weekend, come on by and say hello, Davinita, the staff and I will be happy to see you. OH....and Miz Vicki arrives within the next week or two for the whole summer. Until then, See you at the poolhall. Regards, David.

Hi David and Anthony,
I have my ticket...to the SDQ.
Now i'm looking at which resort I will stay in for a few days of R & R, Sun, beach and pampering (no cooking, no telephones, no coworkers, no dishes).
Of course I will be at the Sports Bar on weekends after my few days at a resort to finally "exhale for the stresses at work.

Any suggestions?
Rafael....you have any suggestions tambien Hermano?
I really wish I was a driver then I would just rent a car and drive to Punta Cana.
Haven't decided what hotel in SQD I will stay at, I'm looking into 3 possibilities near la zona colonial.
I co worker who is Dominican and owns 7 hours wants to show me around and some properties, I'll play that part by ear.

Then I will be off to B r a s i l.
I have 4 weeks of vacation.

Not sure where to post this but, I need some advice. I live part-time in SD. I am a gay foreigner. I own a home here and come faurly regularly. I am pretty well off. Enough on that- I provide this for context. Ok my story is that I regularly get pulled over my the military police. My BMW jeep is then searched and I am always harrassed for $$. The amounts tend to be amall 500 pesos or so but it is scary and I am sometimes afraid I will be taken to the station. They threatened this everytime. Last night, they wanted my cell-phone. I said no. Here is another aspect of the problem. Last night, I was with some of the boys. They got searched. I didnt even think that the guys might have drugs on them. turns out they didnt but what if they had? I was so scared. Also, the boys had ID that was fake, damaged, or otherwise unclear. I never give the boys my real name so the cops picked up that there were some inconsistencies. I am not clear what I should do to avoid these sitations. Any advice. I have a Dominican Lawyer and am pretty well off so I can get out of trouble but I want to avoid it and dont want to feel as though Im being taken advantage of. I spend a lot of money in the DR as a tourist. I do not think it fair to have to be robbed or harrassed. Any helpful suggestions would be appreciated.

Ok - so how do I refuse when they are threatening to take me to jail? Is this a bluff or for real? Should I let them take me in?

Santo Domingo Colonial Zone Apts said...

First, make sure that NO ONE gets in your car if they don't have proper identification. Make sure there are no drugs in the car.

If you have done nothing wrong, then you should not have a problem.

Stay calm. Don't attempt to speak ANY Spanish. And if all else fails, let them take you to jail. It is usually a bluff, but sometimes they may try it. If you get pulled over a lot, then you are seen as a "vic (a potential extortion victim)."

Here is the number (supposedly 24 hours) for the U.S. Embassy in Santo Domingo, 809.221.2171.

I hope this helps. The bottom line, don't give them anything.

Anonymous said...

Try keeping a lower profile. Flying around SD in an expensive SUV is a great way to draw unwanted attention from the police as well as thugs.

Being harrassed by the police may be the least of your problems. Check out DR1.com and see what other horrors expats and tourists who flash wealth are up against.

As it is, Dominicans see foreigners- except hatians- as walking money bags in nikes and ray-bans. Such conspicuous displays of wealth by foreigners, in such a poor country, is actually rather foolish.

Anonymous said...

Thanks for the e-mail responses. I speak Spanish fluently so my instinct is to start talking. I will play dumb from now on. The BMW thing is what it is. Im sorry but I purchased it because it is a great jeep not to flash wealth. I'm sorry if this is offensive or stupid. I happen to have a lot of money and just brought what I normally would in any country. All of the people who live in my community- Los Pinos- have even more opulent cars. Didn't seem like an issue. I think I would be less accepted in my community if I drove a different car. Maybe I should hire a cop to be a security officer. Do you guys think this would work. He could serve as a go between. Don't mean to be silly- Im just worried about going out after 10pm now because I am a "vic". Only happens around the colonial zone or the Malecon. Never happens to me in Arroyo Hondo, Naco, Piantini, Mirador, etc. Any other ideas will be greatly appreciated.

Anonymous said...

Log on to DR1.com as someone suggested and read up all you can on police asking tourists/local ex-patriots for money. They basically say do NOT speak to them in Spanish ever and pretend you do not understand a thing they say. Only AMET police can stop you for infractions, not the regular police in gray uniforms. Oh, yeah, smile a lot, too and call their bluff! Good luck!

Anonymous said...

To the poster with the problem with the Policia Nacional: I have been to SD 5 times and I have been stopped 7 times by the Policia Nacional. I too, was scared and paid to get away. I was getting tired being stopped and asked for money so I asked some of the ex-pats what they did and if they had the same problem. They said they had originally but then they went and complained at the US Consulate in Santo Domingo. The office gave them business cards for the US Consular (one side in English one side in Spanish) and they keep these cards with them. When they are stopped they do not speak spanish and they pull out the business card for the US Consulate and just point and say "Amigo". That is all it takes for them to turn around and run away and leave you alone. I did pick one up the last time I was there and I was stopped and when I showed the card and said Amigo Americano and they saw that it was the Consul they left me alone immediately. Try it because it really works well. I have not had problems on my last two trips. I guess the word must get around with all the bad cops.

"The amounts tend to be small, 500 pesos or so..." On the other hand, if 500 pesos is no big deal for you, just have some 500 peso bills on hand and give them out as needed!

This comment is for the rich guy. I think it is obvious you want people to notice your wealth. First you referred to yourself as being "pretty well-off" ; this morphed into having "a lot of money". What does this have to do with anything? It will do nothing but make many people resent you. You seem to enjoy showing off your ostentatious life-style. This is not very smart in a developing country. So my advice is this: Cool it. Don't be a show-off. Tone it down. Perhaps consider a self-esteem course so people will like you for who you are and not what you have. ¿Entiendes?

BMW Jeep? Gesh the guy must be from Europe. That's where I hear people call a SUV a Jeep. So, is it a X3 or a X5?

Also, for someone who has all the advise from Dominican lawyers, don't they advise him what to do when dealing with the National police? You would think all the Dominicano consejeros would have told him not to flaunt his wealth all over.

Me thinks this guy is trolling.

Anonymous said...

Agreed. It sounds a little off.

Anonymous said...

This comment is for the rich guy also. All this amigos have give u good advises. 1. Low profile. 2. Good lawyers. 3. Dont give money to police. 4. Dont speak Spanish and dont panic. 5. Get a business card. 6. and others. But what u look missing is the message you are sending while driving: "I am doing something illegal, please stop me". Black man in BMW Jeep normally is understood in this country as a result of drug transaction. Riding that car is telling police "here I am, want to share my profit with you".
Prostitution is illegal in DR, normally dominican hustlers are involved in drug dealing and consuming. Some of them are minors intending to pass as olders, and thats another fellony. Having a young boy in your BMW jeep is like having a flag telling police "come and get me I am a pervert". Definetely, you need to rethink the crew you are hanging out with.
Maybe for your night adventures I suggest a more modest car, and a more humble attitude or gear.
Finally, having militar o police friends allways help in this country where always a phone call from your cell may solve any trouble.

Thanks for all of the comments. Just a few points of clarification. I am not black, I am white. This posting is 100% the truth. Sorry if it is a bit offensive. I am a cool guy and have no self-esteem problems. I won't attack anybody for questioning the truthfulness of the e-mail. I understand how the post may look weird. I just wanted a bit of advice. I now have that. I will go to the US embassy and get a card. In addition, I will play stupid when stopped. As far as the X5 goes, it's what I've got and I do not intend to do away with it or feel bad because Im lucky to be well off. My play on words is only to turn down the fact that I do not work to live. My reason for making this clear is that I wanted folks to advise me on what someone im my position might do relative to someone who is a foreigner and more middle or lower economic class. My choice of car or lifestyle is independent of country of residence. Another point is that ALL of my neighbors, their kids, etc. have equally expensive cars- even more so! I live in a community of wealthy Dominicans. In regards to my lawyer, he will help me in a pinch but I felt somewhat embarrassed to call and say Im with two buggarones and just got pulled over. He is a family lawyer- read between the lines. I do not want to have my father or mother find out about my DR lifestyle. I hope folks will understand this. Anyway, I'm clearer about things. If you see a red X5 in pargque independencia or on the Malecon say hello- Darius here.

Anonymous said...

If you do not want your family lawyer to help you out in case you run into trouble when you are out with the local bugarrones and Mommy and Daddy might find out, why don't you do some networking and find a gay or gay-friendly lawyer in who you can confide? It would be also good to find a gay or gay-friendly doctor just to check out those little nasties we are liable to get once in a while too. Good luck!

Anonymous said...

To the rich guy: Thanks for the racial clarification. When a poster thought you were black I thought "huh"? Of course, some people just can't wait to play the race card. So thanks for the racial ID. That said, if you have so dang much money why don't you hire the best lawyer in the DR and throw in a top-of-the-line SUV to boot? Hell, buy one for each of his kids too.

Anonymous said...

I just love this blog. You never know in which direction it will go next!!!

Anonymous said...

Ok Darius, hope you are having a great time.

Asking us here may not provide you with the answers you want, since most of us don't drive around in flashy cars. Maybe the Dominicano who post from time to time will give you an idea?

Better still, if you live among the wealthy Dominicanos, why don't you befriend some of them and ask them for advise (you don't really need to tell them about your sexual orientation and I bet they have similar experiences when going out to the Zona Colonial at night). Hint: I bet most of them will tell you not to drive the X5 with young guys or gals who don't seem to belong in it. And I bet a lot of them have personal chaffeurs.

Btw, the only X5 that I know that comes in Imola Red is the 4.8is. Nice. Still a bit too flashy for my taste. haha.

...and as Darius said, don't assume anyone who writes here is a Black American.

Here's what I do: if the policia insist on attempting to pull me over, i just run them over, say a little prayer for them, and keep going. On occassion i've tossed a 500 peso or so out the window as the rear wheels of the mercedes bumped over them, but other than that I've never had a problem. Ah, dios mio!!

This is for the well-to –do in DR. Since you’re asking us on the blog for advice to your harassment! And for someone who is a foreigner and more middle or lower economic class, then you are, here it goes! Your blog kind of throws me off. After reading your blog you mentioned that you have a very good lawyer & family lawyers? Also in the same time you mention that you’re a tourist and spending money in DR while visiting, which it is! Do you live there? Or are you a wealthy DR tourist! It really does not make any sense! Then you go on to say that” ALL of my neighbors, their kids, etc. have equally expensive cars- even more so!” I don’t understand why this has any impact on the police harassing you with “so call friends in your red x5” I think just like the other posters have said if you have such good Lawyers & money well just get you a prv lawyer to handle all your business’s. If you’re driving with your friends in the colonial zone w/ your red x5, all you’re asking for is trouble. I think your neighbors will understand if you drive a regular jeep w/ 4 tires just to get out with your friends. And not be flashing a car down in the zone area! You think that your neighbor has not seen your friend’s coming & going from your house! Hhhhhmmmmm You would need to think that again! It all sound very childish to me! How old are you any way comparing your self to you’re neighbors kids, and what they sport around, well that does not matter to me! I would think your safety would be more important then what the hell your neighbors thinks of what your drive to pick up your buggarones , oops did I say that out loud, meant to say your friends!

I am sorry for getting confused and thinking of you as african american (from my point of view that is a compliment not an insult), not my intention to get a racial discussion here. But even being a caucasian, or hispanic, or oriental, the advises given by all these folks are valid, and even the body language you are sending to the police is maybe the same.

Being rich is not a problem in DR. But hanging out with male young kids late night when is clear they do not belong to your social circle, especially after the media campaign posting teens with the words "he is not a tourist attraction", is a step for calling attention to a police eager for some extra cash.

Just hang out with people your same age range, or same social circle, and when you get attracted to get one of these boys be extra-careful of not calling attention of officers, because for sure you are commiting a felony.

By the way, this dominicano lives and worked here by his own choice, but has lived and worked overseas, in most of the major cities of the east coast USA, and few of Europe, south and central america.

Anonymous said...

The term is "Asian," not "oriental." That is considered offensive in 2006.

These are blog posts on Anthony's blog, not blogs themselves.

What is the Spanish version of this "He is not a tourist attraction" media campaign? Other than the crap coming from Ms. Cardinal Lopez Rodriguez, I have not heard of anything like this.

No matter this ex-pat drives in Santo Domingo, or anywhere else for that matter, does he deserve to be blackmailed and threatened by the Police. I fail to see why Dominicans do not put up a major protest in front of the Halls of Justice in Santo Domingo. These cops are even worse criminals than the young men they stop and harrass for money. Until the country pays their police force a decent salary that they can live on this will not stop. I also have gone and complained to the US Embassy of this harrassment by the Policia Nacional. They gave me business cards with the name of the US Consulate and the telephone number. The last time I was stopped I took my cell phone out and started dialing the number looking at the card and totally ignoring them. Before I finished dialing I showed them the card and said "Embassia Americano". They took off fast without saying a word. I ran into the same cop about 2 days later and I looked at him and started pointing and he ducked down one of the side streets right away. The last thing they want is to have the Embassy call the President or the Commander of the Policia Nacional using his name. Try it! It works.

I come back after taking some me time, and I see 57 comments.

Some good comments, some, well you decide.

To the commenter being pulled over by the police. You are correct, the neighborhood you live in is very nice and the kind of car you drive blends in with everyone else's. Just because you drive a nice car doesn't mean you should be harrassed by the police.

Also, in this country, as I'm sure you are aware, knowing the right people can get many things done for you.

Bottom line, live your life as you see fit (practicing some discretion). Drive your BMW and when pulled over by police and you are certain that you have not done anything wrong, don't back down. Again, don't raise your voice or anything, but don't allow yourself to be intimidated.

Viva la Republica Dominicana!!!

My My what an interesting variety of commets and suggestions for the few who are asking.I would strongly advise the man with the money and Red Bmw, I do believe, If your intent is driving around and picking up young men or trade , then really your asking for trouble. Many have given you steps to follow if your being pulled over by the polica on a regular basis, heed there suggestions and that shall reduce your chances of being harrassed, keep a cool head and then u should do just fine. Much of what is happening to you , I do believe , your asking for , it is always better to carry a low porfile and not flash money or make people think your a step or two above them, espically there where most people have to struggle to maintain. I can not say what really is happening with you there and how u walk among people from that country but would suggest you take a step back and reevaluate your self and how your comming across, It appears your pissing a few people off here on the blog, and if this is the case , maybe take a serious look at your behavior and how your comming across to others, good luck .
Now has for the Sports bar, why mess up a good thing. Every time I go to Santo Domingo and go to the Sports Bar I always have a nice time ,meeting David , meeting old friends whom I have meet there before and just chatting with many new guy's who may be visiting there for the first time, so why make changes. David is doing new additions to his outside garden and smoking area and let him conti' with that . About adding strippers , My vote is no since that could bring unwanted attention from the local's and his neighbors( those people living around there)Plus keep it has a sports bar not a strip joint, but on the other hand ..... Who am I ??? smile good luck with what ever you decide David....

Another vote here for no strippers. I'd have more fun watching Anthony and David strip. The whole place would get a hoot out of that! Seriously, I do not go there for the strippers but to see David as he is always a warm and welcoming host to us tourists. The first time I went in I felt as if I belonged and was made very comfortable by David. As long as David is there I will always pass by but it would have nothing to do with whether he had strippers or not. I'd rather see David spend money on the bar and not on strippers. Any one of us can get any guy to do a private strip tease for the right money. And did I see someone write here that Friends Bar is the new hot spot where everyone is now hanging out? Yah right...unless Lawrence is back I hardly believe that.

Thank you to all of the people who wrote helpful comments. I have a lot to think over. I do think that a central point is the issue of driving around with guys that are clearly not my social class. This is a real attention seeker. Someone asked why don't I just ask my neighbors. The reason is that they are likely to get pissed off by the fact that Im being harrassed. They will call around and may find out details of the story that I have ommitted (e.g. guys in the car). I NEVER bring anyone home and do not go to the gay bars other than Arena (once in a while) or JDs. I usually hang out at clubs that do not cater to gays. To the person who was questioing my residence. I have a home here. Im here part of the time- like 6 months per year and in the US (Miami) the rest of the time. My family has some international businesses focused on Latin America. The DR is a major partner of ours. I am 25. My parents are older as they had me in their late thirties. They reside in Coral Gables. Our home in the Dr is a place they originally purchased when they lived here some 15 years ago. I now have the house. I studied in the Dr for several years during my family's in country time. This is why I speak Spanish fluently. Our family business has been very successsful by US standards. Hope this adds a bit more info to those that are questioing my post a bit. again, thanks for all.

To the rich white poster, hey you wanna hang out? I have a NY/Dominican friend that I hang out with when I am there. He is sooooooo much fun and he takes me to the coolest places with the most incredible men imaginable. But as much fun as he is, he is slightly dangerous. He is daring, arrogant (the family has a law firm)and has a taste for the nose candy. We have never been stopped by the police THANK GOD, but we do really edgy things that I could never do alone like go to the O Side (I love it!)and places like that. My spanish skills are a bit lacking so I need this friend to step to the wild side of town like over that bridge. Without him I am stuck going to Jd's and the like. Not to put these places down, but the choices are somewhat limited. Especially when there are more tourists than Papis. And as I AM a youthful 33, the clientel sort of reminds me of my good ole'uncle George, and well you know. I will be there next month and I will look out for the red Bmer..or get really bold and post my email address, but I don't want the haters to blow it up. Have fun, be careful and be YOU!

Heres the info on the o'side; From Anthony's main site monaga.com. Thanks Anthony.. Holla!

O'Side

Avenida San Vicente de Paul
Villa Faro, Santo Domingo
Dominican Republic
Tel.: (809)

This club and others like it located on Avenida San Vicente de Paul, are perfect places to check out if you like to see where the "real" Dominicans like to party and play. O'Side is popular with many Dominicans who come from the States and features some of the best music, cheapest drinks, and the people-watching is some of the best on the island. On Monday & Tuesday nights there are male and female strippers (the show starts very late!). This is NOT a gay club, but you will see many gay people here on the DL. If you are adventurous and don't want to hang out at the tourist traps, you should check this out.

I ask about the apparent successful turn around of Bar Friends about two weeks ago and not one comment. Has any of the blog readers been there lately and if so please comment. When there were only 2 or 3 people going there that was all that we read about. What has changed there that has many more supporters?I here that Friends in now the place to see and be seen. What happen that everyone is now going there? How are the other bars/clubs doing?
