Alejandro

In October 2005, I wrote a little blurb about Alejandro, who is always out at the bars. He is someone who I have known since I had been coming here to Santo Domingo. Always cool, no problems. Just here lately, he has been going through some major changes. I had heard of other people telling me about being involved in some drama with him. It seems that now his drug problem has progressed to the point where he is no longer "cool." He can be found lurking at any spot where there are gay tourists.

Last month, he had a problem with a client of mine and tried to intimidate him physically. He and I got into it and he is now banned. After me telling others about our altercation, other stories started to come out. They all seem to follow the same pattern. He agrees to something, then changes his mind and wants a LOT more money. He then comes back the next day with the "police." Only these police are his partners in crime and try and talk the tourists into giving money to Alejandro, to "make this all go away." Of course they get part any money he is able to get.

Another trick he does is to lurk about upstairs at Jay-Dee's jerking off to see if he can lure any victims into his trap. If you go over and touch him or anything, then he wants RD$2,000 pesos. Anyway, you have been warned.

When you see Alejandro,

RRRRUUUUUNNNNN!!!!!!!!

These stories re: Alejandro could go on and on and on.....I must admit that I am a little surprised that you are just finding this out. You usually are on the cutting edge of these dramas. I wholeheartedly agree with your advice....run...run fast...run far.....

As I stated, I had heard many stories, but then I experienced it personally. That said, I have heard stories about others. Alejandro has gotten to the point where I think people should be warned.

Thus, the entry.

it's sad that some of these violent criminals are out there tarnishing the d.r. image.

I believe Alejandro should be banned from Jay Dee's and all other gay clubs by management. Let him see how "easy" it will be for him to pick someone off the streets!

I have brought this up before about other guys and the way we have been assaulted or ripped off or discriminated against. It just Simms that no once raise a eye brow. We go down to DR and any were in the world it could happen. But if all of us just report Incidents like this, and warned other, we have done a lot of good. But I have never seen any of my postings. If every one just banned the person or places that treat us bad they will feel the impact that we have if we stand up for each other. But just ignoring it does not help any one or new comer’s to watch out for trouble head. Ludwig

It is not up to the club/bar owners to vet the clientele. Does anyone do that in the States? If you went to a club owner in the States and told him that you wanted someone banned because he did such-and-such, would he do it? I think not. He wouldn't be banned unless the club/bar owner can confirm something happened in his establishment.

Unfortunately, some people have issues with some of the guys that are personal. And, they will lie to try and ruin their reputation. So, who do you believe? You just have to wait until you can get confirmation from many sources, which is what happened in this case.

Some establishments (clubs/bars)depend on the tourists $$$ and if one of the locals is attempting or has harassed, intimated, threatened any partron who is a tourist then what should the establishment manager/owner/employeess do?
Ignore it?
inquire about this locals reputation?
or just turn ur back and let the books like "spartacus" and word of mouth say that establishment does not care about the tourists?
Or keep your establishment as much drama free as possible so everyone feels comfortable?
I know in nYc if you have a bad rep the bouncers will NOT allow you IN especially if you don't spend "money" give it your a New Yorker or not.
True I agree some have issues with the trade they had before or just had an incident and some times it is personal and some times it's may be an issue we should all know about-------!To many times people are embarrased to tell what happened.

I believe that Nena has a made an important observation in her post. There are not that many gay clubs/bars in SD and known troublemakers should be kept out. I remember a certain guy telling me that David would not admit him into the Sports Bar because he did this or that. I also remember David showing a guy to the door and telling him to never come back. Well done for David. He ran a tight ship and did not put up with any bullshit from anyone. That is one reason his Sports Bar is sorely missed. Others should follow his example. Bar owners/managers must do better for the sake of their paying customers.

This is a subject that comes up often. I want to make sure you understand what I'm saying. YES, if someone is causing you a problem in a particular establishment you should make sure the owner/manager knows about it right then and there. If this person is constantly causing problems then of course he will be banned. But, most of the time the problems happen OUTSIDE of said establishments. What happens is someone will come and say, "he stole my watch/money/wallet/passport last night and I don't want him in here." What should the owners do? They don't know what transpired. Should they get in the middle of the altercation and potentially put themselves in harms way?

Again, if you have a problem inside their establishment with someone, then you should bring it to owner/managers attention right away and let it be dealt with there. But, you can't expect the owners to solve problems that didn't occur at his/her establishment and ban people at your specific whim. These things must be handled on a case-by-case basis.

We as travelers to Santo Domingo have to realize while some of the establishments that we frequent do base their revenue on the visitors to the country(The Sports Bar, Bar Friends, etc.), other establishments have a very strong local dominican customer base(JayDees,Arena,Rouge, etc). When you go into these places on Friday and Saturday nights, they are packed with dominicans that have paid the cover charge to get in. The tourist dollar is only a small amount of the total gross these places take in.

I completely agree with Anthony. The owners of these establishments should try and make you feel comfortable when you visit their businesses, but they cannot police the actions that occur outside of the walls of these businesses. You as an adult must take responsibility for yourself.

You have every right to let people know when you have been taken advantage of. But don't expect the Jerry's and Anthony's of S.D. to handle these people for you.

I would also like to proposition Anthony to possibly create a separate area to this blog where people could get the word out about the few people like Alejandro who they should steer clear of. It would be nice to have that information all in one place rather that to have to go through all the archives. And also others could post pictures and give their accounts of these instances.

Ok...I did not intend to persue this any farther, but let me quote Anthony's exact words: "Another trick he does is to lurk upstairs at JAY DEE's jerking off to see if he can lure any visitors into his trap..." This happens NOT outside, NOT on the street, but IN Jay Dee's. I rest my case.

Rafael, he is now banned from Jay-Dee's. But, if someone doesn't bring it to the attention of the owner/manager, what should they do? Once it is brought to someone's attention, THEN something can be done about it. But, the people that have spoken to me didn't want to make a big deal out of it, so they didn't approach anyone. That is my point, once something happens you say something and let it be taken care of from there. But, my point still stands, owners are not responsible for policing the entire community.

There will always be another "drugged out" "BAD APPLE" like Alejandro who will fade into the picture to take advantage of tourist who have come here to enjoy their vacations. My advise to the tourist is to listen to warnings and don't get caught in these traps created by the "smart" drug addicts who are only looking for money to finance their next fix. We are all smart enough to know what elements are associated with the buggaron trade, the same elements associated with the hustlers back in the states. So a word to the wise, don't come down here thinking that you are in la la land over the rainbow, where you are in a protective bubble, where no harm can be fall you. THINK BEFORE YOU LEAP or in the case of Alejandro, before you "GO DOWN ON HIM". I agree with Anthony and so many others, business owners and managers can not police the buggarons actions outside of their place of business, but they should be made aware of any inappropriate actions that take place INSIDE THEIR ESTABILSHMENTS, so they could then TAKE ACTION!!!!

NEWS FLASH! Every city in the world has some hustlers who will try and get as much money as they can, any way they can. ANOTHER NEWS FLASH! There are johns every where that don't always hold up their end of a deal. Santo Domingo has both of the above. But it is a really cool place, I miss it every day I am not there! My advice when in the DR: be a wise and safety conscious visitor, try and learn some spanish, and enjoy every minute!

Thank you Tim In DC! My sentiments exactly. Keep it real people. We know why we go to Santo Domingo and so do the "Alejandros". It is straight grown folks business. If you need a babysitter then a trip to your local mall might be a better place for you. Before you go touch someone's private parts find out exactly how much it is going to cost you. If the price is high move on to the next trick. Hello. Man up and negotiate. What's to report to an owner? You going to say you were playing with someone that was jacking off and they wanted to charge you an outrageus price? Please! Got love for you Rod in ATL but I think it would be better to post a list of those that got caught slipping! Anthony, thanks for all that you do. Thanks for all the information and updates.
