Photos

I feel like I have been writing this entry for weeks. I would add something. Forget to post it and then feel like why bother, it's old now. Well, here is what I have been wanting to say in short bursts the last couple of weeks.

May 16, is the day of Dominican National elections. Rallies are really big here. Loud. Very, very loud. Deafeningly loud. There are rallies on major roads and the most inopportune times. The rally is fine, but why does traffic have to be stopped. Cold. There are no debates amongst the major candidates. There is a televised question and answer with invited guests. All very civilized. But, as in the States, there is nothing like being an incumbent. Leonel is EVERYWHERE. And the photos are photoshopped beautifully.

Merlin German (photo above), the "Miracle" Marine died a couple of weeks ago at the age of 22. He suffered burns over 97% of his body after his convoy was attacked in Iraq. He was also of Dominican-descent. Click here for the story.

Below are some photos I came across on the internet.
Slate has one of best articles (and photos) on Dominican baseball that I have ever read. You should definitely check it out. Click here.

Bermudez Dominican Rum will soon be available in the United States. Click here.

And more photos I found.

This video above is very disturbing. A couple of weeks ago, 3 guys tried to rob a colmado (corner store). They were caught and a mob got together and, well you can imagine. The twist to the story is the the police come and get them and take them away. They then ended up dead. For a crime-weary neighborhood, it was good riddance. For others, it went too far. You decide.

That's all for now.

Until soon,

WOW! that video is breath taking, was that his leg bent back like that? on TV! maybe we need that neighborhood here in DC, then the young boys will get the message. All this no nonsense killings, and stickups its a shame! That will teach them!

But this is America; Robbers, and Murders have rights too.

Regardless of the crime that was committed, this went much too far.I was more disturbed at the way they were thrown into the police truck. These boys had a mother and other family, My God !!!, they were human beings..We would'nt treat animals that way..Anthony...please don't show videos like that again

Some folks have become so desensitized to the point that they are not phased by watching scenes like that. But what disturbs me, is when there is also a sense of schadenfreude. What have we become?

BABY, talk about your street corner justice! And what did they do to that poor child's leg? Were any of these vigilantes apprehended? I would'nt want to stumble up on that corner during this maddness...Very disturbing on SO MANY levels.

There is a discussion on the DR1.com message board about this incident in the Charles de Gaulle area of Santo Domingo (East). Apparently, the police commissioner has asked that the arresting officers be prosecuted for the boys' murder.

I have to comment again about the behavior of those barbaric police. This should be investigated and the ones on the video should be held accountable, and brought to justice. They were judge and jury to these young boys. In any case, there is a place in hell for them.. together with the likes of Hitler and Saddam Hussein

There is a song by the late great Billie Holiday. I think that the name is "Strange Fruit". Not too long ago, this was standard treatment for people for who looked like you and me. Often, the crimes were real. Sometimes the crimes were aledged. If the winds of change in santo domingo turn against homosexuals, can you imagine being stoned in the streets or beaten into a confession to a crime that you did not commit by the police. They took my neighbors in the dark of night. I did nothing. They came for me in broad daylight.

Thats a song; This is real, I can see it, I saw it, I hear it, I can feel it, we are human, but this country is somewhat set back in the bible days where street justice is somewhat allowed.

Question... What if those boys robbed an American, or an American business? would this have happened? Anthony?

"Strange Fruit" is correct, my friend. On the other hand, if one of these "children" as some would have it, did something to our mother, sister, or other family member, we would all be singing a different tune!

Rafee, what if on the other hand, the police had done that to one of your cousins or brothers, how would you feel? Did you really take a good look at the video? these guys were helpless. They were 3 helpless "human" kids. How can anyone say they deserved this for "stealing" a few things? He who has no sins can throw all the stones..I can't.

You said good riddance to the 3 boys...Your heart goes out to the young marine?..What heart? it dose not seem like you have one.

This is true, Tell it like it is Ralfael!

Ms. Ceali said "Beat her" in this case, them.

@ Rafael
Regardless of their crime and whether or not they were guilty, the police had no cause to be judge and jury on these boys. To make it worse, if they were indeed guilty of being "ladrones" was death a just penalty? Have Dominican citizens, including the police, turned into barbarians like those that are in Jamaica? Mob justice solves nothing.

As someone pointed out in the DR1.com message board, based on these actions anyone can point and yell out "robber" in the streets of the Dominican Republic, then you are automatically convicted and sentenced to death. Regardless if you are innocent.

We are talking about delinquents who were caught while committing a criminal act. Little rattlesnakes grow up into big rattlesnakes. That is my point and I'm stickin' to it. Enough said!

Loving the pics Anthony.

but no one can be judge and jury...one thing that has been proven is that eyewitness testimony is very unreliable especially in the heat of the moment...lock them up and let there be a trial....murder is irreversible.

Some of you are right! What the police did was not right and should be addressed, Losing their jobs but first of all education and teaching them how to handle the public is a start. But a rattle snake will always feed and getting bigger. The Jail is over crowed with large snakes. Even in the states. If we only had harder punishment, and not just taxpayers money for a trials the real victims are the hard store owners, our mothers, sisters, and the old lady that was beaten for a few dollars, the old man over 104 yrs old beaten for his car! They are the victims, but whom do we protect, but the criminals w/ 3 meals and TV and education and allowing them to marry and have relations ship behind the condo that they’re living in. The video is disturbing but it need to be shown so the small snakes could take note of could or will happen. It takes a village to raise a child it will take a village to take their ass out also!

No one, as far as I can tell, is defending the actions of the thieves. The outrage comes from the injustice bestowed upon them. We can callously speak of intangibles, what if this or what if that. But the FACT of the matter is that these young men were murdered by police after being beaten by a mob. We are presently fighting a war in a country where "eye for an eye" justice simply did not work.

For those who feel that these boys got what they deserved: I'm not condoning what they did, just that the punishment was too harsh for the crime. In this case it wasn't an eye for an eye. Somebody caught them robbing a shop, and broke their legs and took their lives too.For what?.. stealing? So....tell me..what punishment should they get for committing murder? I will leave you to gleefully ponder that question in your minds.

Hi Anthony,I did not look at the video for the resons stated here by your readers of this blog, because I just felt it would be something I could not tolerate nor wish to see for the many reasons stated here, it had to be heart wrinching to view, to see what they did to these young men.seems like they were the judge and jury, very disheartening I am sure. However on a brighter and more positive side , the other pictures of La Koki Birthday and how nice she looked in her yellow outfit, it must have been a super fun party , may she have many more,Bless her heart.OMG ... All these hot looking studly men, man oh man just too many good looking men over there , hard to decide which one is the best because there are so many, love the one on the horse , alone with almost all the others, where do u find them? darn we must take a ride the next time over there. Thanks for your steady blog and keeping us all well informed. JIM FROM HOUSTON,TX
