Spirit Airlines

Spirit Airlines has decided that it wasn't making enough money from extra fees. It will now start charging $25-45 for CARRY-ON luggage. *Scratching my head*

So much for your "low-cost alternative."

Do they also charge for checked luggage?

Next, they'll start charging for wearing clothes!

its like they want you to travel but they dont want you to carry anything that you may need...they advertise that they are the low cost carrier but there are several airlines who are much cheaper to fly on

Great! Make them pay! It's a disgrace the enormous bags that some people pass as "carry on" luggage and try to cram into the overhead compartments. You don't have to pay for what you can fit under the seat in front of you. In my case, a small purse with my makeup kit and some extra undies!

Well this is just another reason to leave the drag at home!! First, it would be so costly, and second I would not be allowed in certain bars in Santo Domingo!

Regarding comment #3: "Great! Let them pay." Such selfishness! I'm all right, Jack: "In my case, a small purse with my makeup kit and some extra undies!" To hell with everyone else: new mothers, returning retirees, Dominican residents. Let THEM pay!

If you want to "carry on" the plane everything including the kitchen sink....pay for it! You got that right!

I don't like the idea of all of the extra fees. However, on my last flight, we were all boarded ahead of time but pulled away from the gate 40 minutes LATE!!!! Why? There was so much carry on luggage and much of it was considerably larger than the allowed size. They kept telling passengers that all bins were filled but they kept opening them and trying to rearrange and cram their luggage in instead of going to the front of the plane and checking there. At one point, they made everyone with luggage not in a bin report to the rear of the plane just to clear the aisles. It was crazy.

You work for Spirit with that terrible English? It's a wonder that they've lasted this long!

Take off your superiority cap. It could just be that English isn't his first language. Jeez.

Apparently, it's not his second or third language, either. But that's another topic....

Why are some people so fu**ing bitchy, not mention intolerant and cruel?

My best friend in the DR speaks excellent English but writes it poorly, even though he's a DR university graduate. Why? because he was never tought to write it properly. Why does he speak it so well? Because he recognized he had to in order to advance himself both within and outside the DR, and he took jobs in hospitality so he would be forced to learn English.

Spirit flies to Spanish-language countries and probably hires a lot of locals (at least they should)because they need Spanish speakers, not Spanish essayists. I'll bet if you met the poster behind a Spirit counter in SD you wouldn't know just by speaking with him that he doesn't write as clearly as he speaks.

Perhaps these bitchy posters speak Spanish, and perhaps they write it flawlessly, but I'm willing to bet they don't.

What they probably have done, however, is dissuade someone from ever posting again. And the irony is, his comments were really worth listening to. They changed MY mind from my Wednesday post at the top of this thread.

Oh My, Another English Major, who is critical of others and lacks respect. Not everyone is perfect like some think they are, However they lack decency and respect for others.Just another jealous person who hide behind what they write by not signing there name, so others can read there beads..they have a name for those types of people, begins with a B- - - - h.SMILE.Guess I shall not sign this either so to keep ya guessing...

For an employee of Spirit, he is not even talking about the correct fee. He is talking about the checked luggage policy not the carry on luggage policy......but he is right. You get what you pay for and that is why I don't fly with Spirit Airlines.

Pause.

Deep Breath ...

Now, let's get back to commenting about Spirit. Even if your English is bad. You don't want to read my Spanish writing.

I travel light. Paying to "carry on" luggage is absurd. I called Spirit to protest and was connected to India. I was told it didn't matter the size of the carry on bag, it would be costing $45 per. (the news report where I am said only overhead bags NOT SO accord to Spirit) If we don't nip this in the bud, the other airlines will try it. So I urge anyone feeling as I do to protest. Let Spirit know you won't book. By the way, I doubt if charging would stop those who must bring everything and the kitchen sink with them- it will just take our money for nothing. It's like saying charging more for cigarettes stops smoking, The addicted just grumble and pay. The pack rats will still delay exiting.

You're right, Anthony. We should stay on topic. And we would have except for those nasty comments. But you know me; I'm at an age where I find it not only difficult but self-demeaning to let such stupid ad cruel remarks go unchallenged. I am happy to see they didn't deter the original poster.

Now, back to Spirit. A boycott MIGHT work; other airlines are taking a wait-and-see attitude. However, they will get the revenues they're after one way or another. That's a fact if they are to stay in business. The Spirit employee is simply pointing out Spirit's chosen method, which seems pretty transparent to me.

We can all do our own fare comparisons, being sure to include all charges, and then chose whatever airline we want to fly. (For me, Spirit is a no-go because they don't serve the Bay Area.) I suspect many of us consider other options besides price when we choose or airline (convenience of connections, frequent flier programs, etc.) At least Spirit is disclosing their fare structures. That lets us make our own choices.

Aren't we all sick of "low prices" that turn out to be "high prices"? First Spirit said it was only for oversized carry-on bags that won't fit under the seat. Now it is every carry-on bag. It is just a rip off, they don't even carry it on for me for $45 each way. The airline stinks anyway with flights arriving late at 3 am. I agree that if we don't stop this, other airlines will try it. It is paying for NOTHING. Next they will charge if you wear a watch.

Caveat emptor still rules.

Caveat emptor = buyer beware. You are the only one responsible of what you do with your money, so spend it wisely! The problem here is that if people do pay Spirit for carry-ons, the other airlines may soon follow.

Did you see the CEO of Spirit Airline on NBC "Today Show"?He was question by Matt and the senator who is challenging these new charges ,and I must be honest, he made absolutely no sence to me. So all the other airlines who agreed not too added these extra charges to their customers, shall come out ahead. This should prove to Spirit Airlines that this is not the way to go...just my views(right or wrong)is how I see it..(JFHT)
