Jack Phillips is Dead

It has been confirmed that Jack Phillips' body was found in his apartment. I know there are many questions. One being, wasn't the apartment searched already? Honestly, I don't know the answer. What I do know is that no one deserves to die like that. My thoughts and sympathies go out to his friends and family. Now let's hope that they catch the motherfuckers who did this.

Update: The police are now rounding up suspects for questioning. I just got a call from an American who lives here who was just picked up by the police for questioning. I will keep you posted.

One would think that.. that would have been the first place to look.It has been over 2 months. This is a no brainer!!What have the authorities down there been doing??? Little consolation to his family and friends, but now there can be some sort of closure, and there are other questions, who did it and why?

According to local newspapers, he was found buried underneath the floor of his house in Gazcue! Whoever committed this crime went through quite a lot of physical work to do this and yet the authorities who investigated his house/apartment did not notice anything strange. It was only when trained dogs were brought in that his body was discovered. What a terrible way to die! May he find in death the peace that was denied him in life.

It's with great sadness that I read this early this morning. This is just what I was hoping would not be the news on the end,so very sad along with so many unanswered questions. It puzzels me has to why this was not the first place that the police or investigators serached however, after saying that,it is much too late for that.My prayers along with my deepest sympathy go out to his (sister Jan, son and other family menbers)has well has his friends. Now they can at least give Jack the respect and honor he deserves along with take him home to his final resting place.God be with you all.I hope on the end they find who is responsible(if there was foul play) and give them what they have coming to them. Thad I just sent a translated by google copy of the article to the blog.

Essentially the police found (with Cadaver Dogs) Jacks body in his house under the floor. I've been to his place and the first floor was under renovation with bar's laid for new floor supports and new concrete. Who ever killed him wrapped him in a tarp and buried in the floor and covered with concrete.

Not to get off topic, but here is a link to a pretty good interactive translator. It's nowhere near perfect, but it will give you the gist of any text. You can also use it to translate your love letters to your Dominican boyfriends into Spanish.

Jack Buddy, I miss you.

The police found a 9mm shell casing on the scene. This may be indicative that he was shot by his attacker(s) and then buried in his own house. How tragic is this!

Nina, you are so right!
We all travel and some of us all over the world. Yes this could have happened any were in our own backyard! So many times we are targeted for who we are, and what we have! In the US if they are able to find the person we have laws to protect us! I question the sentence! But reality is how good is the laws when your life or your friends, or family life has been taken away! The LGBTQ community is always targeted, and when your out of the us! Who cares, its one more person they don’t have to deal with visiting there country! There laws or so Call Cardinals does not protect us or care for LGBTQ Community. They might smile with you for the business, but there is no love relationship.. I am from the Islands myself, and three of my best friends were killed for being gay! Its not that they were killed but it is how!!! The most horrible death! Talk about beautiful people. Again they were just gay!!! But they belong to some one! Some ones friend, family loves one!!
I have been traveling to DR for years and so have most of you! We let out guard down so many times, we be leave oh because they are so nice and sweet! Once again the reason we travel down because were all looking for some thing! The reason they are sleeping with us is because they need some thing! They have to feed there family and there habits, it could be drugs, or clothes what ever it is. Its easy money! Don’t have me wrong it could be we all find some one nice. But there is a motive be hind why there sleeping with us, and it’s not because were so beautiful and were so nice and good person. (MONEY)There are no jobs and they need money!!!! Your luck if you every get the right name or id! You really don’t know who they are what they are about. You can’t sleep with your eyes close wondering if they will get up what are they doing. Over and Over I have been asking we need to be more help full to each other. Report and let others know if some one has done you wrong! So we could help each other, what you do with that information is your business but you were warned! Be aware of your surroundings, DO NOT TRAVEL ALONE at night!!! Keep your guard up!! No one is going to help us or rescues us but you’re self’s.

To Craig, Thanks for translating the news article from the paper, it did provide us with many detials that I was not aware of.It's a sad day when you get to your retirement years and plan to go to a beautiful place like Santo Domingo to enjoy your life and end up like this.It sad for the family but Jack has well, his later years were cut way to short in a very unexpected way.I hope whom ever did this gets there payback and that the judge throws the book at him or them.To me, prison would be too good for the person responsible. To bury someone and pour cement over them, my dear God ,what kind of person or persons can they be??After saying that, I must add to those reading this blog, no matter where you live this can happen, even here in th US.Plus we all know there are still many gay-haters(bashers) out there(all over the world).Someone said in this blog, we must look out for each other in all communities. that way, we shall provide a safer haven in which to live.Prayers to the family.JIM from Houston,Tx.

Another paper, listin diario, explained that the police believe that the murder was a crime of passion. It then listed four other foreigners who were killed during the past year. It seems that as afar as most ordinary tourists are concerned, the DR is safe. It is when a foreigner starts living here and gets involved in relationships that issues may arise.

Anonymous said...

Good point. I was thinking of living at least part of the year in the DR once I retired, but now
I'm having serious second thoughts
about the whole idea!

Anonymous said...

My thoughts and prayers go out to Jack's family. We are his friends and his in-the-life brothers, and feel saddened and outraged at his death and the circumstances surrounding his demise. This is a shot across the bow! We are at risk and can be victimized at any time. My question following the previous post: do you think it matters whether we are 'residents' or 'tourists'? Do you believe the authorities would have conducted themselves with anymore diligence if Jack had been just a tourist?

Anonymous said...

Sorry to read about this case and my condolence to the family, now... should this event force us to a reflexion if the community of gay (active or retired) who have created a "sex market" among young-uneducated poor kids in DR is pushing to far?

Americans, Canadians, Germans and Itallians fellows are coming to this country after these kids "meat" and treat them exactly as that: Meat.

I think that is a trigger to form a new delinquent class that was not part of the dominican society but now is caused by the way the foreigners are approaching dominicans just showing cash.

Maybe you fellow should think twice before going to barrios or bars hunting for dicks with an open wallet in front of starving kids.

Dont get confused, I dont think situations like this should ever happens, but arent we provoking it? Hope this is the last new we read about murder and gay life in DR.

We cant wash our faces with pee and pretends it is not stinking.

Ironiclly, there is a difference especially those countries that promote tourism as one of their major money making business. Once we (americans)step out of the "tourist" role and become a resident either part time or full time, those governments treat them different. It's the attitude see what happens when you go some where else to live and your not of that race/nationality/culture. The DR does not have a monopoly on that attitude but for the LGBTQ community it is one of the hot spots we tend to want to spend time in. There is a reason it's called Temptation Island.

I'm waiting for Rafael/PR to comment-as he is one that enjoys the country/culture (more so the MEN---lol)and is from the Latino culture and heritage.

On the previous post on Mr.Phillip on this blog someone wrote, "We
know that he is not dead in his
apartment".(Feb. 18) Well, it seems
that they (the authorities) didn't
look very hard, did they? Also, the
last entry on the previous post is
a sad but true commentary about how
many Dominicans think about gays and this includes the police force.

Anonymous said...

I'll probably get flamed for this, but here goes anyway. I don't think it has so much to do with the police's or religious community's attitudes as it does with about how we as gays comport ourselves when we're visting or living in a different culture. I think that sometimes we don't show enough respect because we're used to spending our money and expecting something for it. And let's not forget this anti-gay violence can happen here just as easily. Remember Laramie?

Anonymous said...

Re crime of passion article - It was in the print version. But as I said, it was speculation, linking Jack's death with the death of previous foreigners. Maybe journalistic hearsay.

Anonymous said...

Please, because Jack had such a violent end we cannot forget the person and his life style. He was not an angel by a long shot. He created many situations which were unfortunate for the people involved. He was not a generous person and he lived a life surrounded by male prostitutes and exploited many people who he felt were less than him. I loved Jack, but I didn't like him. I did not approve of the way he treated certain people with such disregard for them as people. He was not honest about many things and took complete advantage if he was able to. It seems to me that he was on a collision course with his terrible fate. It is called "karma." On a superficial level he could be very charming. But inside he had many demons eating him up. I feel sorry for Jack. He was treated like garbage at the end. Sometimes we "reap what we sow." I will miss the funny and sometimes kind side of Jack. I pray for his soul.

Anonymous said...

So the poster at Sun Mar 15 1:44 believes that negative reactions towards gays are brought on by how "we as gays comport ourselves when we're visiting or living in a different culture." How do we gays behave ourselves? Pray tell. Do we walk down El Conde with our high heels on and ostrich feathers in our hair? Do we go to the local
colmado with our rollers on or go to Cathedral in our g-strings? Most gay tourists I've come upon are rather low key and do not care to attract undue attention. On the contrary, it's the local gays that I've seen carrying on and kicking up their heels in public. A lot of the prejudice and homophobia in Latin countries is based on almost 500 years of cultural and religious beliefs. More than in other countries. So, if culture and religion tells you that gays are the scum of the earth and going to hell anyway, why not take advantage of them? For after all, who cares? The government? The police? The church? It's a learned behaviour that gays are less than zero and may take another 500 years to be undone. I think that most gays just want to be left alone to live our lives as best we can. After all, is that too much to ask?

Rafael

I disagree (somewhat) with the blogger about how many treat the young dominican men (meat market). There are many many who treat these "men" with a lot of respect and especially take care of them...giving them money, dressing them (giving them money for their families--if it gets there) AND yes there are some who go to the DR just for "sex". The guys maybe under-educated but they are far from being stupid and allowing themelves to be exploited by a tourist or a retirees. Even with the porno industry going to the DR and making gay movies with the so called "straights and/or bugarrons)...no one forces anyone to do compromising scenes. While on my visits to the DR, I have seen too many gay tourists take care of their younger or equal in age "sex partners" and the men perfectly know what they are doing and want. Now if a tourist is having sex with a underaged child/boy then he's washing his face in urine and pretending(I agree)! I also agree with those going to Barrios and flexing your deep pockets---and this will definitely bring resentment and trouble as in many caribbean islands and south american islands. But on the whole at least from what I have seen in the 10 years, most americans who visit the DR treat the "guys" well and are too trusting of them.."thinking they are monongamous boyfrieds, lovers, husbands" Remember the status the local men put on clothing: especially sneakers, basketball shirts, etc. and not to even mention those who want plenty of 420 and other drugs.

Again, that is my opinion and observation...! and I do understand where that blogger was coming from...! Very few find true love and monogamy in the DR (at least for the gay tourists)but if one is in denial then......hey!

Just imagine if same sex marriage was legal in the DR.....UH OHHHH!

I love my caribbean men and culture but again i'm a realist and understand what the men in the caribbean are looking for....it's not love and/or companionship (unfortunately) and yes I know it's not ALL but most.

Enjoy your sunday...and I still wishing I was in the sun, at the beach and wearing shorts and tank top and sipping on a COCKtail! (gigglin)

Many posts tell stories of a man with emotional issues and a variety of run-ins with expats and local residents.

DR has always been a fairly dangerous place if you're not careful. Always.

Let's not generalize this particular case into how as gay men we're targets and nobody cares what happens to us and blah, blah, blah. Keep in mind there are many unresolved murder cases involving local residents that no one pays attention to and are never resolved.

On the other hand, tourists, straight and gay have been attacked just visiting local tourist attractions that were no where near the barrio.

I go in and out of the barrio from time to time for a variety of reasons and never feel threatened. It's like any ghetto anywhere in the world. You must be careful.

From the moment you step off the plane you are nothing more than an opportunity for someone to make money. While many men- and women- have turned this particular feat into an art form, it's up to you to protect your self and keep your wits about you.

Lastly, a 9mm handgun is not easy to get hold of in DR. Isn't that a service weapon used primarily in the armed services and local law enforcement?

Not for nothing but the idea that this body was in the house all this time and the police SUPPOSEDLY checked several times and only discovered the body after dogs sniffed it out, weeks after he disappeared (giving ample time for the body to decompose and evidence to to weaken) is a little more than odd. Nuff said.

Anonymous said...

I really think we should use this sad ocassion to consider ways that we can make the members of the gay community that live and visit the DR safer. Hopefully, out of this tragedy ideas will come as to how best to do that.

I suggest we use technology to protect the community in this way: always take a shot of the man you met and took home with your phone, then send the pic to your best friend and let the guy know to have sent it "just to check how cute your new man is". With this simple game your are giving a lead for any future problem, and you are giving the message to the man: "someone knows about you, so behave". I Think with this method we are exercising wisdom.

Good Morning, There are many interesting post here and from some we can learn much in how to be better tourist and better people,However one thing that sticks out in the forfront for me is this "IF YOU DO NOT HAVE SOMETHING GOOD OR POSITIVE TO SAY ABOUT SOMEONE WHO HAS PASS ON THEN PLEASE DO NOT SAY ANYTHING".NOW THIS DATES ME,YOUR RIGHT,I AM OLDER PERSON AND HAVE A GREAT DEAL OF RESPECT FOR THE DEAD,IN FACT WAS BROUGHT(sp) UP THAT WAY.Now I happen to agree with much of what Rafael said from PR.The locals, Church, police along with the goverment have a poor inpressions of how Gays act about plus carry themselves in public, so do keep that in mine.I do feel strongly that when traveling anywhere there are certain precautions we must all take,(Nena, said it best)at all times, that is to be wise who your associate with, never completely let your guard down and if at all Possible connect with someone you trust(or have some type of bond with) when out and about in any new strange areas, espically at night. To the person who said we take advantage of all the Dominican men we meet, your so wrong, some of us treat them with the up most respect and do much to help there situation out, give them money for there familys and espically children and even buy food for young children(dry milk, grocerys, baby things cloths and much more.Feed children along the street who are hungery and have nonthing to eat, so I did take offence at your general commets.Try and be more objective in how you generalize others, not all gay men are bad people with little or no feeling for others.I have even went along with another friend and purchased food for a place(orfamhage)sp.)there that cares for children with Aids,so see there are many good things done by many of us and this is just to mention a few good things we have done.I do not say this to brag but to let you know there many of us who care and try to help those in need and have much less than we have been blessed with. Thanks for reading this and again my regards to Jack's family, May he rest in Peace.Jim From Houston, Tx.

I never met or knew anything about Jack Phillips except for when Anthony first posted the information. It's an unfortunate testiment when your friends (in your death) have very little kind/positive testiments to say about you.

I would hope if anyone was so "negative"(for a lack of a better word) that he/she would have affected at least one person in his/her life with compassion, love and true friendship.

Hope peace finds Jack Phillips!
and
I hope our 'community' gets some true, honest closure to what happened that night.

I visited DR in Jan. The hotel where I stayed allowed "guests" but they were required to leave their ID with reception. Reception didn't give it back until they called me to verify everything was ok. When walking with my dominican boyfriend, I kept a few steps behind him while we were in public, out of respect for his feelings and privacy. I mean, what other explanation is there when a young dominican is accompanying a gringo if it's not his jefe? It's a macho society and has not yet been enlightened by a local stonewall. Probably won't for quite some time.

I've been held up at gunpoint and thrown in jail in Mexico, so I know my way around. I also have property in Costa Rica. I probably would never live solo in a foreign country. There were a series of "lone man" murders, as they were called in the local spanish press. Inevitably the victim was an older gringo pensionado living alone, no signs of forced entry, nothing stolen except maybe money, must have been someone he knew, had lots of young male friends - etc. In other words, everything except the word "gay" to describe him.

My belief from reading this is the deceased must have known his killer, who must have been familiar with his house, and apparently left a bullet shell behind. Not a very well thought out robbery, if that was the only motive. It's a sober reminder.

Check out the movie "Going South" sometime. It's about white females in Haiti taking good care of their colored boys. It's not just a gay thing. The guide book says if you hit someone in Haiti with your car, it's best to let them die. Life is cheap on this island, no reason why us foreigners should be exempt.

Any way, this has had me re-thinking some long range plans I've had. Sorry if I push any buttons, I'm just thinking out loud and appreciate your patience with me while I meander.

PS I'm a different Craig than the earlier poster.

The post that mentions Costa Rica is food for thought especially the 2nd and 3rd paragraphs. Although I
don't look a day past 35, I will be
61 in a few months (insert oohs! and aaahs! here....). Calm down, you bitches!

In truth, once you've reached a certain age, there is not much more to go. You feel that you want to do something extra before the final curtain. Something like moving to a place where life seems freer or more exciting like a Pacific or Caribbean island. A place that has other benefits ripe for the pickings which will hopefully comfort you in your final years.

It is then that reality sets in: you are an old, alone, gay man in a foreign country and the only reason those younger men "associate" with you is
because they hope to get some or all of your money should you have
any. Ok..Ok...Cinderella stories do
happen, but they are few and far
between. For most of us, there will be no glass slipper. It's just the way it is.

I have always thought of renting or
buying an apt. in Santo Domingo once I retired to live there for part of the year. Now that I am retired, I am having second thoughts. And certianly what happened to Mr. Phillips (however evil some may portray him) is food
for thought.

My friends and I have a great time when we visit, but if they left and I had to stay on by myself day after day after day....would I still find it as satisfactory? This is without taking into account a long list of things that could happen. Well, I guess that I'll have to find that out on my own and soon, because like the saying goes, "Time stops for no man"....straight or gay!

THOSE OF US WHO KNEW JACK KNOW THAT HE ALWAYS BROUGHT A SMILE AND A LAUGH. WE SHOULD REMEMBER HIM FOR THOSE SMILES AND LAUGHS AND THE GOOD TIMES WE HAD AT PACOS. WE MUST PROTECT EACH OTHER AND WHEN WE ARE TEMPTED TO GO OFF WITH THE LATEST ADONIS, BE SURE THAT WE LET SOMEONE ELSE KNOW WHO WE ARE WITH. THE WRITERS WHO SUGGESTED A PHOTO WAS RIGHT ON AND WE SHOULD HEED THAT ADVICE.
AS I MENTIONED BEFORE, JACK NEVER LET ANYONE IN HIS HOUSE THAT HE DIDN'T KNOW AND TRUST. SO WE ALL PROBABLY KNOW THE KILLER AND SHOULD BE AWARE.
I WAS NOT AT ALL CLOSE TO JACK BUT I DO MOURN HIS DEATH AND WISH HIM PEACE.

I have been following the Jack story and am not shocked by the many emotions stirring. What happened is yet to be determined. It is certain that he is dead as a result of murder. The rest is yet to be determined. What strikes me is how a few have taken the opportunity to demean the victim. Many of us have paid a great price simply because we are gay and born that way. The process of coming out, is for some us, very traumatic. There is a obvious lack of self esteem in the gay community. As such many of us from time to time attempt to fill the love void and take chances. Be cautious in judgment. Mi madre me dijo a mi muchas veces,David, quien escupe para arriba se le cae la saliva. Very simply, be careful about spitting up in the air because it falls back in your own eye. The randomness and uncertainty of life is such that many bad things happen to good people and to bad people. We can be careful, take precautions and be hyper vigilent. Yet, sometimes it just is not enough. As a communtiy it saddens me to see the number of vicious queens and the self depricating behaviors they desplay. We all have demons, it is the human dilemma. How we handle our demons determines to some degree our maturity. I look in the mirror and deal with me. The trashing of the dead is left to those who are unhappy with self. What happened to Jack happens everyday to gays everywhere. We are still considered to be canalla, swine. In DR you only need to read the remarks of the Bishop, Cardinal etc to get an idea of the true sentiment of the people. Dealing with prostitutes is always risky. It is a exchange of tangibles. At times there are emotions but bottom line it represents an exchange of resources. The prostitutes serve a purpose. In general, me too, we make a mistake thinking we can trust them beyond the act. I do not give advice but I believe it is best to recoginize them as prostitutes, have them, pay them and have established boundaries.
It is very diagnostic and telling to witness the responses to this event. Most obvious is that within the gay community there is a lot of diversity. We may be gay but we are not all the same!! In my profession I see many gays from all walks of life and sterotyping our preference is dangerous, limiting and sad. I agree with Rafael from Puerto Rico. Bien dicho! Sabiduria comes with maturity and sometimes with age but not always.

David in NY,
It's not so much that there is a lot of self-hate, etc., with the posts. For those who knew the man, let's face it, he was not an all round nice person. If he was, then in death, no matter how he died, I am sure there would have been only positive comments. And, the posts are more for those of us who are still alive - treat people well, with respect, no matter what their lot in life. we never know how we'll meet our own demise, but, at least at the end of all this, they will say 'this was a nice person'.

Right on, Brien. You said it so much better than I did, but that's what I meant in my post that started "I'll probably be flamed...."

Were all very different in this world, after saying that, some of us have better qualities and are a bite more caring than others. There is and old saying "There is good in everyone ,some you just have to look a bite deeper than others".I like to look at the positive side of life and look at others in that same light. Now I am sure the english major will tear this to shreads since he is "OH SO PERFECT", well have to it.Your still loved by many or at least by a few..despite your nasty negative ways.. smile.. there is a coward among us!!!! one of "us" has been going around the colonial zone and telling anyone who would listen, and not many of us pay attention to what he says, that he knows who killed jack. if true, man tell the police and don't just walk around spewing your usual "get attention" lies. this is too serious for you to seek attention, we need to know who did this and why. either put up or shut the fuck up! from jim

It is with deepest regret that I received a phone call from Jack's son about his murder. You see, I was Jack's lover back in the 80's and helped him raise 2 wonderful, beautiful, and productive children. The pain of hearing a son have to tell me that his father was murdred, and his frantic attempts to get both the American Embassy and the FBI involved has left me emotionally devastated. Whatever you want to say about Jack you must first remember he was a person, second, he was a father, third he was a brother, and fourth no one deserves to be murdered. Perhaps he wasn't perfect, but you who have not cast the first sin cast the first stone. He was a human being and for this to happen to any one anywhere is devastating. I know I am a better person for having Jack in my life and I feel his loss profoundly. To Martha, to John, to Janet, I am so sorry for your loss, and mine.
