South & West

One of the areas I am not familiar with is the southwest of the country. I took a 2-day excursion to try and change that. You know how it is when you plan a trip and people commit, only to back out at the last minute. Well, Ernest Montgomery and I pressed on in search of adventure. And that is exactly what we found.

Over the past couple of weeks some regular readers of the blog have gone to Barahona, and parts south of there. And they came back with some great tales. Some of the information was very reluctantly shared with me. As they didn't want me to blab everything on the blog.

We drove about 3 hours (with a few stops along the way) to get to Barahona. Once there we decided to look for a place to stay. The options are not nearly as vast as in other regions of the country. We checked out the Hotel Costa Larimar and the Hotel Gurocaya (can't remember the spelling). The first hotel was decent and they had several plans that go from $100 - 150 (depending on meal plans). The second hotel reminded us of the hotel in the movie The Shining. Huge and dilapidated. But we found a place called the Gran Barahona. It was clean, had hot water and air conditioning and was only about $38 per night. It is also walking distance to the Malecon and all the bars and restaurants. We went searching for a pool hall and soon found one. Played some pool, drank a few Presidente's and then decided to see what the local nightlife was like. Found a club called Lotus, located in the town center. It was packed, so we sat and hang out at the park right in front. Nice.

The next morning we started driving south. Little did we know that there are no ATMs in any town south of Barahona. At least according to all the locals we asked. There was also very intermittent cell phone reception. You drive up a mountain and a signal would be strong and a minute later no service. Internet service is also something very hit and miss.

We stopped at San Rafael, Paraiso, Los Patos, Enriquillo, Lake Oviedo and finally Pedernales, which is on the border with Haiti. Lake Oviedo is part of the Jaragua National Park. There are boat tours that take you to 23 islands and show you the iguanas and other wildlife native to the Dominican Republic. The drive from Barahona to Pedernales is about 2.5 hours. We got to Pedernales just as the sun was setting. So we really did not see much. We tried to look for an internet cafe to see if there was a hotel where we could stay. Could not find anything. Then we thought, fuck it, let's just drive back to Barahona. And we did.

On the drive to Pedernales we looked at several hotels that were just off the highway. One was the Playa Azul Hotel (no website), which is where we ended up staying on our drive back from Pedernales. We also checked out the Casa Bonita, which looks exactly like its photos. But it is a little out of the way as it is sitting on the side of a mountain up a gravel road. The decor, rooms and views are great. Definitely for those looking for something nice.

We chose Playa Azul, and I am glad we did. It is owned by a couple of Dominican and French descent. This place sits right on a cliff overlooking the ocean. It has its own private beach, swimming pool, and these great bungalows. You can also get a great massage for $12 (half-hour) right by the ocean. Nothing fancy, but clean, nice and can't beat the location. Single occupancy is about $55, and double is $70 per night, including breakfast. I would definitely stay there again.

Another reason I went was to find this gay guy in the town of Los Patos. Some friends went down and met a guy who they could not stop raving about. He took them to his home, then out on a bar crawl and introduced them to the local guys. It was like pulling teeth to get the information from them. But I am so glad they relented, after I promised not to reveal too much. They couldn't remember his name but gave me a description and told me he is gay and everyone knows him. Not really much to go on. We went to Los Patos on Sunday and it was packed. I didn't think it would have any chance in finding him. We decided to go back on Monday to give it one more try. As we pull up to the park, I decided to ask the guy who watches the car. I told him what I knew and he immediately said yeah, I know him. Proceeded to take me directly to him and the rest is history. I too, love him. Nice, open and he is out and proud, in this small town.

Ernest and I had decided we needed to stay an extra night. But we knew we shouldn't. I really needed to get back to Santo Domingo, as did he. After spending 6 hours hanging out with him I knew that if we didn't leave then, we probably would never leave. Though we didn't want to, we finally left and drove back to Barahona to look for the internet and an ATM, for the drive back to Santo Domingo. And that is when we decided to go back next week.

I have some more photos to download. But in the meantime, here is a picture from a photo shoot Ernest did on the beach.

Weekend Roundup

I had a really great weekend. Many friends came down to visit because of the Memorial Day holiday in the States. Then there were the weekend of activities for Ernest Montgomery's birthday. The highlight of the weekend was the cocktails and dinner on the beach in Juan Dolio at the Aura Beach House. Exquisite evening. Unfortunately, I took a lot of pictures, but I put the camera on "nightshot" and most came out very blurry. It was good to see a lot of tourists in town for the weekend. There are so many things to do for the holiday in the States. It was good to see a nice crowd here.Stripper working the crowd into a frenzy @ Jay-Dee's.One of the Dominican City Gym Boys, at this past weekend's D.C. Pride. Photos sent in by M. Sessions.

Ernest Montgomery Photoshoot

Ernest Montgomery is working on a coffee-table book of photos of the beautiful men from around the world he has photographed. On his trips here he sometimes allows me to tag along. I'm in charge of oiling the bodies down just so. It's a hard job, but then someone HAS to do it.

See if you can tell which model I liked best?

Loose Ends

In my never-ending quest to find about all things Dominican, I came across a blog that is dedicated to the Dominican Transgendered population. As the Transgendered population is even more marginalized than gay population at-large, I think this is a great project to bring about some dignity and respect.

Also, while reading the blog, I found out that the
Metropolitan Community Church has started Sunday services at ASA (Amigos Siempre Amigos). According to the post, the services are open to the entire gay community.

Beautifulmag, a European blog, has an interesting article called, "
The Real Beauty of Men, According to Ernest Montgomery. As regular readers to the blog know, I'm a big Ernest Montgomery fan. And I'm an even bigger fan of his photography. Now, if he would only let me come over and "help" more.

The
New York Times had a really nice piece the other day about Robinson Cano, New York Yankees player. He is trying to buy an ambulance for his hometown of San Pedro de Marcoris. But, he doesn't make the millions that other Dominican players make, but he is trying to do his part. And. He ain't bad on the eyes, if you know what I mean. Kudos!!

Another interesting article I came across is about justice, or the lack thereof, in Latin America. There is a special blurb about the
Dominican Republic. Two-thirds of the prisoners in Dominican jails have not been charged with a crime, tried or convicted. They use what is called "preventive custody." I love that term. It basically means you are going to stay in jail until we decide (or your family comes up with enough money) you should get out. And you thought your life was difficult.

Keeping with the theme above, White Sox player,
Juan Uribe, is now in the clear. He was being investigated for shooting 2 people. I wonder how he got out of the country and didn't have to go into "preventive custody?"

The latest edition of FREE Magazine is out (though the website hasn't been updated yet!) and they have a great layout on the Dominican Republic. The photos, taken by photographer Hassan Kinley, are beautiful and evoke the essence that is La Republica Dominicana. All the models are local Dominican talent, except for the absolutely gorgeous (and extremely nice) Miguel Perdomo, who is a Dominican from the States. The whole production was supervised by Ernest Montgomery.

As someone who was a groupie at different times during the shoot, I can attest to the hard work that goes into being beautiful in magazines. It ain't easy. But, then someone has to be beautiful. Right? I hung out with the crew at the cockfight, but honestly, all I did was drink beer and watch bags. The sight of "cocks" that lost was not pretty. But, then beauty is not a pretty business.

There is also a story on Mario Cabral, who is the owner of several restaurants (one being Aura), lounges and the exclusive Praia club in Santo Domingo. I love the opening blurb of the piece:

Mario Cabral can be found one afternoon quietly sitting in one of his restaurants in the Dominican Republic and the next day can be seen walking Lexington Avenue in Manhattan. From the Caribbean to the cold, from business to business, and plane to plane, this is the life of a 30-year-old Dominican entrepreneur.

Isn't it great being young, wealthy and Dominican!

Other Tidbits

I know, this is looking suspicious. Posting 3 days in a row. What can I say? I'm just feeling it.

Anyway, a while back Byron forwards me an email from someone wanting some pictures of the Dominican Republic. I put them in touch with Ernest Montgomery, and think nothing more of it. Over the last couple of days I get links to the new issue of Pulse Magazine, which is published by GMAD. There are great articles on a myriad of topics, exquisite photos, fashion layouts and more. The total package is upscle and just simply top-notch. This is the type of magazine i would put out if I had the money and talent. But then, I wouldn't expect anything less from Byron Barnes, editor-in-chief of Pulse Magazine, along with being the creative director at Iman Cosmetics.

I then get to page 71, and see that there is an article on my beloved Dominican Republic. Again, I like the design and layout (though I wish they had used Dominican models, but that's a minor quibble). They even have a listing for the Camilo House Apartments, which is VERY nice indeed. Then I read the article and find a couple of things that are completely incorrect. Like Cabarete being 25 minutes from Santo Domingo, or CHA charging $50 entrance fee.

Seriously, the magazine is FAB, but the next time you need some information on Gay Santo Domingo, why not check with the Gay Man of African Descent who lives here? LOL!

Here's another tidbit:

Last week, I was at the airport to pick up a friend of mine. The runway coming out of the Las Americas Airport is one of the best places to people watch in the Dominican Republic. As I wait for my friend to come out of the terminal, I see this guy who looks awfully familiar. I try not to STARE, but I couldn't help myself. Then it hits me. It is Roberto, a stripper that I used to love tipping at Stella's in NYC. I met Roberto when he first came to the States when he could barely speak English, and all I could do was count and curse in Spanish. I watched him grow and prosper (I do tip nicely, thank you!) and we always kept in touch, at least until I moved here. He was one of the first people I told that I was going to move here. His reaction was the same. WHY?

My friend comes out and remembers Roberto, too. He proceeds to tell me about the time he and a friend ... well, you know, had a good time watching Roberto strip. Anyway, it was really good seeing him. I couldn't tell if he still has the same body, 'cause he had on his baggy NYC clothes. But he seemed happy and healthy. He couldn't believe that I was still here. Some days, I can't believe it myself. LOL!

Slow curtain, the end ...

Until soon,

Carnival Photos

I couldn't find any good, or at least what I thought of as good, photos from this past Sunday's carnival on the Malecon. Enter Ernest Montgomery, a frequent contributor to the Monaga blog. He sent me some great shots he captured before the crush of the crowds sent him home. There was a lot of talk amongst the gay population about a particular float that was costumed as Indians. They wore nothing under their outfits and had the crowd in a tizzy when the wind would blow the garments up.
